Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 3 & 4 — your questions, answered

Is this pattern No. 3 or No. 4?
Both. The leaflet is one pattern — one set of instructions and charts — for two colour versions of the same sweater, with the colours side by side in the materials list and the same amounts. No. 3 is black, with copper and white (on the cover, marked 12-03). No. 4 is grey, with white and black sheep (on the back page, marked 12-04). Where the instructions differ, they say “No. 3” or “No. 4”: No. 3 casts on in black and ribs in copper, No. 4 casts on and ribs in white, and the necks are different.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For No. 4, yes: 0057 (M), 0051 (A) and 0052 (B) are still made by Ístex — grey, white and black sheep in its other leaflets; our shop calls them grey heather, white and black sheep heather. For No. 3, two of the three: 0059 (M, black) and 0051 (B, white) are still made, but 9384 (A — the rib at the hem and cuffs, the first 3 cm of the neck and the copper in both charts) is not. The leaflet prints only the numbers; Ístex calls 9384 copper in its Lopi 18 leaflets. We have no kit for No. 3.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm all the way round and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm to the underarm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body is 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s 128 to 160 stitches at the pattern’s gauge (our check). Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same amounts for both versions: M 5 (6, 6, 7, 7), A 3 and B 2 in every size — 10 (11, 11, 12, 12) balls. No. 3: M black (0059), A copper (9384), B white (0051). No. 4: M grey (0057), A white (0051), B black sheep (0052). The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
What is different about the two necks?
Both start the same way: the yoke ends with 75 (78, 81, 87, 90) stitches, decreased to 54 (54, 56, 58, 60) on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles. No. 3 then has 3 cm of K1, P1 rib in copper and 9 cm of stocking stitch in black, cast off loosely; the pattern does not fold it, and in the photo it stands up as a high black neck. No. 4 has 8 cm of K1, P1 rib in white, cast off loosely, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched — a double neckband.
Anything to watch for?
In sizes S and M the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out” on the sleeves: 44 stitches do not divide by the 8-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm (our reading). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The chart key prints the codes short: 59, 384 and 51 for No. 3, and 57, 51 and 52 for No. 4. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters are. In our photo of No. 4, the black polo neck under the sweater, the black trousers, the small plant and the other person’s hands are not. In the PDF, the cover shows No. 3 with jeans, beside a man in Lopi 12 no. 5 (marked 12-05), and the back page shows No. 4 beside a man in Lopi 12 no. 12 (marked 12-12) — both different patterns.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of No. 3; a page with a small photo of No. 4, the sizes, the materials for both versions, the tension, all the instructions, the border chart and the key; a page with the yoke chart; and a back page with a photo of No. 4 and Ístex’s address.
