Bára Þórarinsdóttir’s children’s round-yoke sweater from Ístex’s Lopi 12, knitted in Álafosslopi: a light grey ash heather body and a yoke in white and black heather — a white band with a scalloped edge, small black heather diamonds and upright white stems below the neck — with a matching border above the hem and cuffs and a folded neckband that shows a thin black edge at the top. The leaflet also has a plain grey stocking-stitch hat by Astrid Ellingsen, the one in the photo. The sweater comes in five sizes, to fit children 110 to 152 cm tall, and the hat in two.

M 0056 ash heather — 3 (4 4 5 5) · a misprint: these are the sweater’s five amounts, and the hat has two sizes — by our estimate one ball makes the hat

Needles
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, 60 cm, for the hem rib
6 mm (US 10) circular needle, 60 cm, for the body and the yoke
4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for the cuffs and the neckband
6 mm (US 10) double-pointed needles for the sleeves, the top of the yoke and the hat
The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”
You will also need
Stitch holders for the underarm stitches (the pattern lists them), and a tapestry needle for grafting the underarms, sewing down the neckband and drawing up the top of the hat.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up. The hem and cuffs are cast on in black heather and knitted in K1, P1 rib in ash heather on 4.5 mm — 5 (5, 5, 6, 6) cm — followed on 6 mm by chart 1, a 7-round border of white and black heather on grey. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke: a 35-round chart with four decrease rounds, from 156 (168, 174, 186, 198) stitches to 52 (56, 58, 62, 66); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds, and a few rounds of the border and the yoke use all three colours at once. The neckband is K1, P1 rib on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — 2½ (2½, 2½, 3, 3) cm in ash heather, then black heather until it measures 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) cm — folded in half to the inside, so a thin black edge shows at the top; the underarm stitches are grafted. The hat is plain stocking stitch in the round on 6 mm double-pointed needles: 60 (63) stitches knitted straight for 20 (21) cm, then decreased to 5 (6) stitches and drawn up. It has no rib; in the photo its lower edge rolls up into a brim.
Design: Bára Þórarinsdóttir; the hat is by Astrid Ellingsen — pattern from Lopi No. 12 (no. 27), Ístex.

Why you'll love it
- Three-colour yokeWhite and black heather on grey: a white band with a scalloped edge, small black heather diamonds and upright white stems up to the neck.
- Dark-tipped collarThe neckband changes from grey to black heather partway up, so once it is folded a thin black edge shows at the top.
- Matching borderSeven rounds of white and black heather above the rib at the hem and at both cuffs, with a black heather cast-on edge below.
- A hat as wellThe plain grey hat in the photo is in the same leaflet, by Astrid Ellingsen, in two sizes.
