Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 18 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All three are still made by Ístex: 0056 (M, the light grey body), 0005 (A, the black motifs) and 0051 (B, the white in the yoke). The leaflet prints only the colour numbers. Our shop calls them ash heather, black heather and white, so go by the numbers — 0054, light ash heather, is a different grey.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm to the underarm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men, and the body is 38 to 44 cm from the hem to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so choose by the width you want the sweater to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: M (0056) 6 (6, 7, 7, 8), A (0005) 2 in every size and B (0051) 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) — 9 balls in XS and S, 10 in M, 11 in L and 12 in XL. The pattern gives one set of amounts for both sleeve lengths, although the men’s sleeves are 5 cm longer.
Are the black stitches really purled?
Yes. The chart key marks the black heather stitches “05 P”, purled, except the first black round of the border chart and one stitch in each repeat on round 3 of the yoke chart, which are knitted (“05 K”). The grey and the white are knitted. In the photo the dark motifs show as small bumps.
Anything to watch for?
In sizes S and M the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out” on the sleeves: 44 stitches do not divide by the 8-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. The charts start at different stitches depending on the size; the start points are marked under each chart, and chart 1 has its own for the sleeves. In sizes S and XL the front is 2 stitches narrower than the back at the yoke join; the totals are right. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm straight after the cuff and has only 40 to 48 stitches after the first round — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
Only the man’s grey sweater. His lilac neckerchief and black trousers are not. The woman wears Lopi 12 no. 14, a different pattern; her black hat, red scarf and light trousers are not part of this one either — the leaflet has no hat.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes and all the instructions, a page with both charts and the key, and Ístex’s back cover.
