Good to know

Lilja — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Green version: highland green (1230) and light beige (0086) Álafosslopi, and Léttlopi black sheep (0052), rust heather (9427), stone blue (9418) and brick heather (9431), are still made by Ístex; rose heather (9428) is no longer made — our green kit uses 1412 pink heather instead. Auburn version: all four — sheep sorrel (1237), black (0059), teal heather (9967) and amber (9971) — are still made. Our shop’s names differ a little (light beige heather, black sheep heather, stone blue heather, amber heather), so go by the colour numbers.
How is it knitted from side to side?
You start at the left cuff and knit the left sleeve up in the round. Then stitches are cast on either side of the sleeve for the front and the back, and the body is knitted in the round from the left side to the right side, the rounds running from the hem over the shoulder and down again. The front opening is made by binding off the front stitches and casting them on again in the next round. Then the side is closed with a three-needle bind-off and the right sleeve is knitted down to its cuff.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — S, M, L, XL and XXL — with a chest of 92, 97, 101, 106 and 110 cm all the way round, 70, 73, 74, 76 and 77 cm from the shoulder to the hem, and sleeves of 48, 49, 50, 51 and 52 cm to the underarm. The chest matches the number of body rounds at the pattern’s 18 rounds to 10 cm (our check).
How much yarn do I need?
Green: Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, highland green (A) 7 (8, 8, 9, 10) and light beige (B) 2, and 1 ball (50 g) each of the five Léttlopi colours. Auburn: Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, sheep sorrel (A) 7 (8, 8, 9, 9), black (B) 2, teal heather (C) 1 and amber (D) 1.
Why are two Léttlopi colours knitted together in the green version?
Every dark square of the green charts is one strand of black sheep (C) and one strand of rust, stone blue, brick or rose heather held together and knitted as one — the chart says which pair for each group of rows. That is what gives the dark motifs their mixed colour.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes, in two places. The lower edge is a steek of purled stitches, sewn twice by machine and cut open. The neckline is marked with scrap yarn — 8 (8, 8, 9, 9) cm each side of the centre at the shoulders and 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) cm down the front — sewn by machine and cut, and the collar is picked up along it.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
The collar has 8 rows, a fold row and 8 more rows, but the pattern doesn’t say to fold it and sew it down; the photos show a short collar, so fold it to the inside along the fold row and sew it down (our reading). The list leaves out waste yarn, a sewing machine and thread, markers and a tapestry needle.
Who designed it?
The leaflet credits four people: the original pattern is by Margrét Jóhannesdóttir and Védís Jónsdóttir redesigned it for Lopi 34; the original instructions are by Astrid Ellingsen, revised by Hulda Hákonardóttir.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans are, with their buttons (not included). The dark jeans, the black top and dress and the black leggings are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of both colourways; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials for both colourways, gauge, notes and the instructions; a page with the end of the finishing, the credits and charts 1 to 3 for both colourways; and a page with chart 4 for both colourways and Ístex’s address.
