Laufey — a girl’s name; lauf means leaf. Guðný María Höskuldsdóttir’s cardigan for children from Ístex’s Lopi 30 is knitted from the neck down, back and forth, with two strands of Plötulopi held together. The yoke is a rib of twisted stitches between purls, with a bobble and then a small leaf on each rib; the body and sleeves are plain stocking stitch, with garter-stitch edges and buttons all the way down the front. The pattern gives it in two colours, clover green and jasper red, in sizes 6 to 10 years; both colours are still made by Ístex.

How it is knitted
Knitted from the neck down, back and forth, with two strands of Plötulopi held together. The neck edge is 3 rows of garter stitch on 4.5 mm; then, on 5.5 mm, the yoke is a rib of twisted knit stitches between purls from chart 1, with 2 garter stitches at each front edge. A bobble sits on each rib in row 5, and from row 7 or 9 of chart 1, depending on the size, a leaf from chart 2 grows out of each rib — yarn overs widen it to 5 stitches and decreases close it again. Six increase rows in the purls take the yoke from 61 (65, 69) to 143 (153, 163) stitches, and 4 garter rows finish it. The sleeve stitches are put aside, 7 stitches are cast on at each underarm, and the body is knitted back and forth in stocking stitch to 27 (30, 35) cm from the underarm, with a buttonhole every 12 rows all the way down, then 4 garter rows on 4.5 mm. The sleeves are picked up with 7 stitches from the underarm, knitted in the round on 5.5 mm double-pointed needles, decreased 5 times and finished with 4 rows of garter stitch on 4.5 mm.
