Good to know

Kjós — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All ten are still made by Ístex: brown — sheep sorrel (1237), ray of light (1235), burnt orange (1236), highland green (1230) and chartreuse green (9965); red — oxblood red (1242), winter morning (1239), dark magenta (1240), teal heather (9967) and arctic exposure (1232). Our shop calls 9965 chartreuse green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 4, 6, 8 and 10 years — with a chest of 69, 75, 81 and 87 cm all the way round, 28, 30, 34 and 36 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 28, 32, 34 and 37 cm to the underarm.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: the main colour (A) 3 (4, 5, 5) and one ball each of B, C, D and E — 7 (8, 9, 9) balls. The amounts are the same for both colourways.
Which colours go where in the yoke?
The key gives each square a letter, A to E, with a code for each colourway. But in both photos the colours lettered C and E are the other way round in the yoke: in the brown cardigan the squares drawn yellow-green are chartreuse green (E) and the squares drawn red are burnt orange (C); in the red cardigan the yellow-green squares are arctic exposure (E) and the red squares are dark magenta (C). The chart’s own colours match the brown photo. To knit the yoke as photographed, use E for the yellow-green squares and C for the red ones (our reading). The 2-row stripe in the rib is C, as printed — burnt orange or dark magenta in the photos. The yarn amounts stay the same either way.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with 2 purl stitches at the centre front. When you weave in the ends, pull the ones beside the purl stitches through to the right side, so the machine stitching catches them. Sew twice by machine with small straight stitches through each chain of purl stitches, rinse and dry the cardigan, then cut between the sewn rows. The zip is sewn in under the front edges twice with matching thread — first from the right side where the edge folds, then the edge is slip-stitched from the wrong side.
How long a zip do I need?
The pattern does not say. The zip runs from the hem to the top of the collar: by our rough calculation about 45 (47, 55, 58) cm, but the row gauge of the yoke varies, so measure your knitted front before you buy it.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans are. The jeans, the socks, the boy’s trainers, the girl’s aqua tulle skirt and shoes, and the red bench are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of both cardigans; one page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials for both colourways, gauge, notes, all the instructions, the yoke chart and its key; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
