Good to know

Kaðlastaðir — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. Both are still made by Ístex: peach (9990) Einband and light beige (0003) Plötulopi. Our shop calls 0003 light beige heather, so go by the colour number. They are always knitted together, one strand of each.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S/M, L and XL. The pattern prints a chest of 94, 102 and 112 cm, 36 to 38 cm from the hem to the underarm and sleeves of 51 to 54 cm. By our calculation the pieces come out wider than the printed chest at the pattern’s own gauge, 16 stitches to 10 cm over the cables: the back alone is 92 (98, 106) stitches, about 57.5 (61, 66) cm wide, and each front, without its facing, about 30 (32.5, 35) cm — about 118 (126, 136) cm laid side by side, and still about 111 (120, 130) cm all the way round once the side seams are sewn and one front border lies over the other to close. That is 17 to 18 cm more than the printed chest, which would fit a firmer fabric of about 19 stitches to 10 cm. Knit a swatch in the cable pattern and measure it before you choose a size.
How much yarn do I need?
Peach Einband (A) in 50 g balls: 4 (4, 5); and light beige Plötulopi (B) in 100 g plates: 5 (5, 6). One strand of each is knitted together, and the Plötulopi is used as a single strand (single-ply).
Which needles do I need?
6.5 mm for the back, the fronts and the collar, and 5.5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeve cuffs. The sleeve instructions then change to 7 mm double-pointed needles for the purl-3, knit-1 rib — a size the materials list leaves out — and do not say to change back to 6.5 mm for the cabled upper sleeve. The list also names 5.5 mm circular needles and 6.5 mm double-pointed needles that the instructions don’t mention.
How are the cables knitted?
With a cable needle: for a left cross, put 4 stitches on the cable needle in front, knit 4, then knit the 4 from the cable needle; for a right cross, hold them behind. Everything else in both charts is stocking stitch. Each chart is 12 rows with a 20-stitch repeat and one cross of each kind; the collar starts at its own mark on chart 2.
What else do I need?
A cable needle, about 150 cm of ribbon 2.5 cm wide and 8–9 press studs — 8 for S/M and L, 9 for XL. The two ribbons are cut 1 cm longer than the front, from the top of the collar to the lower edge, with ½ cm folded under at each end.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge and all the instructions; a page with the two cable charts and the key; and Ístex’s back cover.
