Description

Leppalúði is Grýla's husband and the father of the thirteen Icelandic Yule Lads. He is her third husband, and in the old poems an ogre in his own right, who comes with a sack on his back asking for children.

Brian Pilkington's figure has him standing barefoot on dark stones with his arms folded and a scowl, bald on top, with a narrow white beard and a ragged tunic tied with a rope. He is painted by hand, stands about 15 cm (5.9 in) tall, the same as Grýla, and comes in a window box with a small English booklet about the family.

Who is Leppalúði?

Grýla's husband and the father of the thirteen Yule Lads. The National Museum of Iceland calls the pair two of the most hideous ogres ever known in Iceland, the mother especially. Like her, he is still used to frighten children into behaving.

Is he one of the Yule Lads?

No. There are thirteen Yule Lads and he is their father. The series has sixteen figures because it adds Grýla, Leppalúði and the Yule Cat to the thirteen brothers.

Is he dangerous, or only Grýla?

Both, in the old poems. The Árni Magnússon Institute in Reykjavík has published a short one in which Leppalúði turns up very large, with a shaggy sack on his back, and asks to be given a child. It ends with him chasing the narrator into a church and running off into the mountain when the bell is rung.

Should I buy him together with Grýla?

They are sold separately and are the same height, so they stand as a pair on the shelf.
