Good to know

Hjörtu — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. Murky (1420), straw (1418) and white (0051) are all still made by Ístex. In the photo murky is a mid brown.
Where are the hearts?
In the yoke: chart 3 is one row of big white hearts round the cardigan’s yoke. The body and sleeves have small straw V shapes, with a band of straw stripes and small white-and-straw diamonds above the rib. The trousers are plain murky.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Cardigan: murky (A) 3, straw (B) 2 (2, 3) and white (C) 1 — 6 (6, 7) balls. Trousers: murky 3 more. Both pieces: 9 (9, 10) balls.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — 6–9, 9–18 and 18–24 months. The cardigan has a chest of 56, 59 and 64 cm all the way round, 16, 18 and 20 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 18, 20 and 22 cm. The pattern gives the trousers’ length as 24, 26 and 28 cm. By our reading that is the leg up to the crotch: each leg is knitted to 21 (23, 25) cm and then increased over 6 more rounds. The top of the waistband sits roughly 19 to 22 cm above the crotch at the front (our calculation).
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. Two purl stitches at the centre front of the cardigan form a steek. Before sewing, pull the yarn ends through to the right side along the purl stitches, so the machine stitching catches them. Sew twice by machine through each chain of purl stitches with small straight stitches, rinse and dry the cardigan, then cut between the sewn rows. The front bands are then crocheted along both fronts.
How are the front bands made?
With the 4 mm crochet hook and murky: three rows of single crochet (US term) along each front, the first row with one stitch in every other knitted row. The left band holds the buttons — 6 markers, the first at the neckline, the last 1–2 cm above the cast-on edge. The right band has the buttonholes, made in its second row by skipping 1 stitch and chaining 1.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The cardigan puts 5 (6, 8) body stitches on a holder at each underarm but only 4 (5, 8) sleeve stitches, so in the two smaller sizes the sides differ by a stitch when you graft them (our reading). The neckband says “4 rnds” of rib, but it is knitted back and forth, so 4 rows. The needle list has no 4.5 mm double-pointed needles (see Needles), and it leaves out elastic, a sewing machine, stitch holders and a tapestry needle. The pattern says “pants” for the trousers.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The cardigan and the trousers are. The ball and the tan suede shoes are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes, the cardigan’s instructions to the start of the finishing, chart 1 and the colour key; a page with the rest of the finishing and the crocheted bands, the trousers, a close-up photo of the yoke and charts 2 to 4; and Ístex’s back cover.
