Hetta — hood. Guðrún Ragna Sigurjónsdóttir’s hood from Ístex’s Lopi 32, knitted back and forth in one piece from two balls of Léttlopi on a 5.5 mm needle, with moss-stitch edges and a moss-stitch panel up the middle and over the crown. Crocheted bands along the lower front edges close it with four buttons under the chin; the photos show it worn up as a hood and down round the neck as a collar. One size for women and children, in two colours: light beige heather or spring green heather. Both are still made.

Size
One size for women and children. The hood is about 27 cm from the lower edge to the start of the crown shaping, and the crocheted button band under the chin is about 17.5 cm long.
Gauge
16 sts × 23 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 5.5 mm needles.
Needles
5.5 mm (US 9) circular needle, 60 cm — the hood is knitted back and forth on it
You will also need
4 buttons (the pattern gives no size) and a 4.5 mm crochet hook for the button bands — both in the pattern’s list — and a tapestry needle for weaving in the ends, which the list leaves out.
How it is knitted
Knitted back and forth in one piece, from the lower edge up. 94 stitches are cast on and 7 rows of moss stitch are worked; from then on 6 stitches at each edge and 16 in the middle stay in moss stitch, with stocking stitch between. After 8 more rows, 18 stitches are decreased beside the edge borders — 3 at each side on every other row, three times — leaving 76. At 27 cm the stitches either side of the middle panel are decreased on every other row, six times; then the panel is worked back and forth on its own, taking in one stitch from the sides at the end of every row — the way a sock heel is turned — until only its 16 stitches remain, and they are bound off. With the crochet hook, bands of single crochet are worked up the lower 17.5 cm of both front edges, one with four buttonholes, and the buttons are sewn on the other.
