Góa is the fifth month of winter in the old Icelandic calendar — as the pattern puts it, the sun rises higher and long-awaited spring is on its way. Védís Jónsdóttir’s round-yoke sweater from Ístex’s Lopi 44 is knitted in fine Fjallalopi on 3.5 mm needles: a light moorit body with a yoke of mustard and ginger zigzags, marron, moss and a band of light diamonds, and the same colours in a band above each cuff. The body is short — 26 to 35 cm from the hem to the underarm; in the photo it ends at the waist. One colour version, in seven sizes, XS to 3XL. All five colours are still made.

Needles
3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm, for the body and the yoke

3 mm and 3.5 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves — 3 mm for the cuffs
You will also need
Stitch holders for the underarm stitches and a tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in — the instructions use them, but the pattern’s list leaves them out.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up. The body is cast on in light moorit on the 3 mm circular, worked in 9 rounds of K2, P2 rib and then in plain stocking stitch on 3.5 mm, with no shaping, to 26 (27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 35) cm. The sleeves start with 3 rounds of rib in light moorit and 6 in moss on 3 mm double-pointed needles, then the 24-round band from chart 1 on 3.5 mm (XS and S leave out two rounds), and are increased — evenly in the first chart round, then at the underarm — to 78 (82, 86, 90, 94, 98, 102) stitches. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke: a 70-round chart with six decrease rounds, from 304 (320, 336, 352, 368, 384, 400) stitches to 95 (100, 105, 110, 115, 120, 125); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. The neckband is knitted on 3 mm in moss — a decrease round and 6 rounds of K2, P2 rib — then 3 rounds in light moorit, and bound off loosely in rib. The underarms are grafted.
