Glypja is Védís Jónsdóttir’s long, narrow scarf from Ístex’s Lopi 28, knitted back and forth in Álafosslopi over only 20 stitches. A rib with a dropped yarn-over in every repeat leaves open ladders between the ribs, and both ends finish in a fringe of 3-strand tassels. One colour and one size: 12 cm wide and 190 cm long before the fringe, from 2 balls of Álafosslopi. The pattern’s colour, orchid (0159), is no longer made.

Gauge

Needles
6 mm (US 10) circular needle, 60 cm — the scarf is knitted back and forth on it
You will also need
A crochet hook to attach the fringe — the instructions use one, but it is not in the pattern’s list and no size is given.
How it is knitted
Knitted back and forth over 20 stitches on a 6 mm needle. After two set-up rows, one row is worked on both sides all the way: P1, then *K1, yarn over, drop the yarn-over from the row before, P1* six times, and knit the last stitch. The dropped yarn-overs leave open ladders between the ribs, and the stitch count stays at 20. At 190 cm a last right-side row purls into the yarn-overs instead of dropping them, which secures them, and the scarf is bound off loosely: P1, *K1, P2*, K1. For the fringe, 42 strands of 40 cm are cut and attached with a crochet hook, 3 strands at every knit column at both ends, and trimmed evenly. Last, the scarf is rinsed by hand in lukewarm water and laid flat to dry.

Why you'll love it
- Open laddersIn every repeat a yarn-over is dropped on the next row, which leaves open ladders between the ribs.
- Only 20 stitchesA narrow scarf, 12 cm wide, knitted back and forth on a 6 mm needle with the same row on both sides.
- Tassel fringeThree 40 cm strands at every knit column, at both ends — 42 strands in all.
- Long ends190 cm before the fringe; in the photo it goes once round the neck and both fringed ends hang down the front.
