Good to know

Frikki — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. Oatmeal (0085), chocolate (0867), dark grey (0058) and light ash (0056) — the two versions in the photos — are all still made by Ístex, and so are the red version’s happy red (0047) and black Hosuband (0059). Our shop calls them oatmeal heather, chocolate heather, dark grey heather and ash heather, so go by the colour numbers. Our shop does not stock Hosuband in black (0059), and there is no kit for the red version.
Which letter or picture?
Any you like. Draw it on the blank grid in the pattern (25 stitches by 30 rounds), then, when the sweater is finished, sew it on the front with duplicate stitch — each knitted stitch of the letter is covered with a stitch in the contrast colour. Its top goes 1–2 rounds below the first decrease in the yoke. The photos show an F and a J.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, S to XXL. The size table gives a chest of 92, 102, 108, 114 and 123 cm. By our count the body has 120 (132, 140, 148, 160) stitches at the chest, which at the pattern’s 12 stitches to 10 cm is about 100 (110, 117, 123, 133) cm all the way round — 8 to 10 cm more (our calculation). Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose. Men’s: 46 to 50 cm from the hem to the underarm and sleeves of 49 to 53 cm; ladies’: 56 to 60 cm and 46 to 50 cm.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Men’s brown: oatmeal (A) 6 (7, 8, 8, 9) and chocolate (C) 1. Ladies’: dark grey (A) 7 (8, 9, 10, 11) and light ash (C) 1. Men’s red: happy red (A) 7 (7, 8, 8, 9) and 2 balls (100 g) of black Hosuband (B) in every size.
What is the Hosuband for?
Only the red version uses it. Hosuband is Ístex’s sock yarn; the pattern uses it to make the cast-on edge and part of the sleeves more durable. The sleeves are knitted in red to 18 (19, 20, 20, 21) cm from the cast-on edge, then 20 cm in black Hosuband, then red again. The note says the cast-on edge is Hosuband too, but the instructions say to cast on in A and never say when to change, so you decide how much of the edge to knit in black.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The finishing says to sew the letter “with col B”; for the brown and ladies’ versions the letter yarn is C (chocolate or light ash) — B is the red version’s Hosuband. It points to a grid “on page 36” — the page in the book; in this PDF the grid is page 3. The sleeve increases are the same for both lengths, so in the ladies’ M, L and XXL the last increase falls up to about 1½ cm past the shorter ladies’ sleeve length at the pattern’s row gauge (our calculation); work the increases a little closer together there (our suggestion). The materials list leaves out stitch markers, stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters are. The flat cap, the camera and its strap and the brown trousers in the first photo, and the black trousers in the second, are not. The PDF photographs only the men’s brown version; the ladies’ photo is from Ístex’s photos of this pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials for all three versions, gauge, notes and all the instructions; a page with the blank grid for your letter; and Ístex’s back cover.
