Good to know

Bylgja (Lopi 31) — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Four of the five are still made by Ístex: Léttlopi light ash (0056) for the sweater, and ash heather (0054), dark grey heather (0058) and black heather (0005) for the waves. Dark wine (9417), the fourth wave colour, is no longer made — in the photos it is the purple line — so choose another Léttlopi shade for it. Our shop’s names for 0056 and 0054 are the other way round: it calls 0056 ash heather and 0054 light ash heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 85, 91, 95, 102 and 108 cm all the way round (it matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge — our check). It is long: 50, 52, 54, 56 and 58 cm from the underarm to the hem, and the yoke is 20 to 24 cm deep, so about 70 to 82 cm from the neck edge to the hem by our calculation. The sleeves are ¾-length, 38, 40, 42, 42 and 44 cm from the underarm.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: light ash (A) 7 (7, 8, 8, 9). For the waves the pattern lists only about 2 to 3 metres of each of the four colours.
How are the waves made?
After the knitting, with the 3.5 mm crochet hook. Hold the yarn inside the sweater, push the hook through from the right side and draw up a loop; then push the hook through again, catch the yarn and draw it through the fabric and through the loop on the hook — a line of slip stitches on the surface. Or sew the lines in duplicate stitch. There is no chart: the pattern suggests drawing the waves on first with a finer yarn or thread.
Which side do the waves go on?
The pattern says the left front. In the photos they are on the left as you look at the sweater, which is the wearer’s right. They go on after the knitting, so you can choose (our reading).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small things. In size M the yoke has 198 stitches, but the division places 37 + 61 + 37 + 62 = 197 — one stitch is left over and the pattern doesn’t say where; the counts after that follow the printed numbers. The yoke increases say “rows” although the yoke is knitted in rounds. The list leaves out stitch holders, a marker and a tapestry needle.
Is this the Bylgja from Lopi 29?
No. Lopi 29 has a different pattern called Bylgja. This one is Lopi 31, no. 23, by Guðbjörg Pálmadóttir.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is, with its waves. The dark leggings are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes, all the instructions and a close-up of the waves; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
