Why you'll love it

  • Lanes of colourBack, fronts and sleeves are made of narrow strips, each with its own order of colours, so the blocks sit staggered across the cardigan.
  • Flat knitting, row by rowEvery piece is stocking stitch knitted back and forth on one 6 mm needle, following written row counts — there is no chart.
  • Seed-stitch framesSeed stitch along every edge and at every colour change frames each block with a ridged line.
  • A snood from the leftoversAbout 110 g of leftover Álafosslopi makes a snood knitted in the round, a little over 25 cm tall.
  • Clasps, not buttonsThree hook-and-eye clasps close the front, inside or outside — on the cover they are on the outside.

Good to know

Brautir — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Yes. All fourteen are still made by Ístex. Colorful: midnight blue (0709), bordeaux (9961), ruby red (9962), golden (9964), amber (9971), chartreuse green (9965) and teal (9967). Earth tones: black heather (0005), indigo (9959), highland green (1230), ash (0054), grey (0057), wheat (9973) and chocolate (0867). Our shop calls 0054 light ash heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 105, 117 and 129 cm, a length of 68, 70 and 72 cm, and sleeves of 50 cm in every size.
How much yarn do I need?
The same in all three sizes: 12 balls (100 g) of Álafosslopi — 3 of A, 2 each of B, C and G, and 1 each of D, E and F, in either colourway. The snood is made from about 110 g of what is left over; the pattern adds no yarn for it.
How is it put together?
The twelve pieces — four strips for the back, four for the fronts and two halves for each sleeve — are sewn edge to edge with colour A, between the purled stitches of the seed-stitch edges: back and fronts first, then the shoulders and sleeves. The top 4.5 cm of each inner sleeve seam is left open and sewn to the stitches bound off at the underarm. Then the front edges and the neckline are oversewn with the same stitch so they do not stretch. The pattern suggests marking each piece as you finish it, to make sewing up easier.
What closes the front?
Three hook-and-eye clasps, fastened on the inside or the outside — on the cover they are on the outside. They are not included. The pattern also suggests an optional wide knitted tape or ribbon sewn inside the front and neckline.
How is the snood made?
From about 110 g of leftover Álafosslopi: cast on 80 stitches in A, join into a round, work 3 rounds of seed stitch and knit to 15 cm, “or as long as the color goes”, ending with a round of seed stitch. Change to G, work 1 round of seed stitch, knit to 25 cm, work 3 rounds of seed stitch and bind off in seed stitch.
Do I have many ends to weave in?
Very few. The pattern asks you to splice the ends at each colour change: thin about 8 cm of both ends, overlap them and roll them together between your palms.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans and the snood are. The beige trousers in the earth-tones photo and the light jeans in the colorful one are not. The PDF shows the colorful cardigan and snood on its back page; our photo of them is a different picture.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the earth-tones cardigan; two pages with the sizes, the materials for both colourways, gauge, notes, all twelve pieces, the finishing and the snood; and a photo of the colorful cardigan and snood on the back page.
