Good to know

Boði — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Navy blue (9420) and garnet red (1409), the two Léttlopi colours, are still made by Ístex. The blue Álafosslopi, sapphire blue heather (9968, printed “saphire blue”), is no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses space blue (1233) in its place — brighter and more vivid than the muted, denim-like blue in the photo, and still clearly apart from the navy collar and stripes.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 104, 109 and 115 cm and a body length of 60, 62 and 64 cm; the armholes start at 36 (37, 38) cm. The chest matches the stitch count of the back and both fronts at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so choose by the measurement all the way round that you want the vest to have.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: A, the blue, 4 (4, 5). Léttlopi in 50 g balls: B navy blue 2 in every size and C garnet red 1 (2, 2). That is 7 balls in S, 8 in M and 9 in L.
How do the stripes work?
In the stripe blocks the two Léttlopi colours, navy and garnet red, are always knitted together as one strand. The chart draws those stitches as scattered navy and red squares, but the key has only one symbol for them (“B 9420 and C 1409 K tog”), so we read every navy or red square as the two strands knitted together, and the blue squares in the same rows in the blue. Navy alone is used for the front bands, the outer half of the collar and the armhole edges; red alone for the last 2 rows of the collar and the last armhole round.
Is there anything to watch for in the pattern?
A few things. The chart key and the text disagree about the grey size lines; the text is right (our count of the chart): dark grey lines are knitted in M and L, light grey lines in L only, and S skips both. The front neck stitches put on holders are not mentioned again — presumably they go into the collar when you pick up its stitches. The collar’s “2 rnds” in red are rows, since the vest opens at the front. And “Pick up with Léttlopi and B” for the front bands means one strand of navy (B) Léttlopi (our reading).
Which zip do I need?
The pattern only says “Zip: 55–60 cm”. A vest that opens all the way needs an open-ended (separating) zip. The front edge is 53 (55, 56) cm to the neck, and the folded collar adds about 6 cm if the zip runs up to its top, so M and L may need the 60 cm end of that range or a little more (our calculation) — measure your finished front edge before you buy it. The pattern says to sew it to the Léttlopi front bands from the right side, then slip-stitch its edge loosely from the wrong side.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The vest is. The dark polo-collar sweater under it and the jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, gauge, the back and the back chart, a page with the fronts, the finishing and the front chart, and Ístex’s back cover.
