Blaka is a small triangular lace scarf by Védís Jónsdóttir from Ístex’s Einband pattern series, knitted back and forth in one ball of black Einband, from 2 stitches at the point up to the long top edge. The lace chart is Barbara Walker’s The Bat — by our reading of the chart, three bats, one above the point and two side by side higher up — and the two sloping sides get a row of crocheted chain loops. One version, one size, 40 × 72 cm. Black (0059) is still made. Lopi 31 has a different pattern with the same name, a sweater.

Size
One size: 40 cm long and 72 cm wide (15¾″ × 28¼″) — by our reading, 40 cm from the point to the top edge and 72 cm along the top edge. These are the finished measurements; the pattern says the scarf stretches when it is washed and blocked.
Gauge
17 sts × 30 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles, measured after blocking.
Needles
4 mm (US 6) circular needle, 80 cm — the scarf is knitted back and forth on it
You will also need
A 3 mm crochet hook for the chain-loop edging (in the pattern’s list), and — though the list leaves them out — a tapestry needle, and pins for blocking.
How it is knitted
Knitted back and forth from the point up. Two stitches are cast on and the first five rows are written out: the wrong-side rows are purled — or knitted from left to right, as you prefer — and the right-side rows are P1, yo, P1, then P1, yo, P1, yo, P1. Then comes the lace chart, which shows only the right-side rows: each has 2 purl stitches and a yarn over at both edges, so the triangle grows by 2 stitches on every right-side row, and the wrong-side rows are plain. The lace is The Bat — bat motifs outlined in eyelets, with small V shapes of eyelets between them and a row of eyelets across the top. After the chart come one wrong-side row, a right-side row of P2, K1, P1 rib and P2, and a loose bind-off in pattern from the wrong side. With the 3 mm hook, chain loops are crocheted along the two sloping sides, from one top corner round the point to the other — 7 chains, then 1 single crochet in the edge at every other eyelet — but not along the bound-off edge. Last, the scarf is rinsed by hand and laid flat to dry, stretched, with every chain loop and the edges pinned out.
Design: Védís Jónsdóttir, with the charted knitting pattern The Bat by Barbara Walker — pattern from Ístex’s Einband pattern series, no. 4.
