Good to know

B&G — your questions, answered

What is the difference between the short and the long version?
The body length and the colours. Short: 34 (37, 39, 41) cm from the hem to the underarm, dark grey Álafosslopi with a black Léttlopi hood and pockets, the pockets sewn straight up from the rib. Long: 44 (47, 49, 51) cm, dark olive with a chocolate hood and pockets, the pockets 20 (22, 23, 24) cm up from the rib. In both, the pockets sit 4 cm from the front edge, and the sleeves, yoke and hood are the same. If you knit the long length in other colours, use the long version’s amounts — it takes one more ball of Álafosslopi in every size.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 8, 10, 12 and 14 years — with a chest of 80, 86, 92 and 98 cm and sleeves of 36, 39, 42 and 45 cm to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so choose by the width you want the hoodie to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Short: dark grey (0058) Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, 5 (6, 7, 7), and black (0005) Léttlopi in 50 g balls, 2 in every size. Long: dark olive (9987) Álafosslopi 6 (7, 8, 8) and chocolate (0867) Léttlopi 2 in every size.
What zipper do I need?
A two-way zipper — the pattern lists a “zipper with 2 slides”. It gives no length, and the long version needs a longer one, so measure the front edge when the knitting is done. The zipper is sewn under the front edge by machine with zigzag stitches in matching thread, or by hand: first from the right side, then slip-stitch its edge from the wrong side.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Three of the four are still made by Ístex: dark grey (0058), black (0005) and chocolate (0867). Dark olive Álafosslopi (9987) is no longer in Ístex’s range; the long olive kit uses 9987 from our remaining stock. The pattern prints Léttlopi 0005 as “black”; Stúkur, in the same book, calls it black heather. Our shop calls 0058 dark grey heather and 0867 chocolate heather — go by the colour numbers.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The neckband needle size is not given; it follows straight on from the yoke, which is knitted on 6 mm (our reading). The colour of the hood and pocket borders is not given; in the photo they match the hood and pockets. And in the short rows for size 12, “=> 62 L.” means 62 stitches.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials, sizes, gauge, body, sleeves, yoke and the short rows for each size, a page with the neckband, hood, pockets and finishing, and Ístex’s back cover.
