Why you'll love it

  • A deep collarKnitted sideways in two strands of Einband — eyelets, long dropped stitches and crossed groups — then sewn on round the neck.
  • Small diamondsTiny diamonds of crossed stitches, scattered over the body and sleeves from one 16-stitch chart.
  • Openwork cuffsA 9 cm border in two strands, with long stitches and lace rounds that widen it into a flared cuff.
  • Longer at the backShort rows add about 9.5 cm to the back, and the pattern calls the fit rather loose.

Good to know

Askja — your questions, answered

Which size should I knit?
Six sizes, XS to 2XL, with a chest of 89, 100, 107, 114, 126 and 134 cm and sleeves of 42 to 44 cm to the underarm. The body below the underarm is knitted to 34 (32.5, 33, 31.5, 33.5, 33.5) cm before the short rows and the lower border; the back then gets about 9.5 cm more. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the washed gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round, after washing. The pattern calls the fit rather loose.
Why are there two gauges?
Einband changes when it is washed. The pattern gives 22 stitches and 30 rows to 10 cm on 3.5 mm needles before washing, and 24 stitches and 32 rows after. The size table matches the washed figure (our check), so wash your swatch before you measure it.
How much yarn do I need?
Einband in 50 g balls, one colour, blush (9128): 7 (7, 8, 8, 9, 10) balls. Ístex still makes it. The borders, the sleeve bands and the collar are knitted with two strands held together; the amounts include them.
Is the sweater lace all over?
No. The body and sleeves are stocking stitch with small diamonds of crossed stitches: one stitch crossed over the next with a cable needle, from a 16-stitch, 24-row chart. The openwork is in the band of long stitches at the top of each sleeve, the cuffs and the collar. You will need a cable needle; it is not in the pattern’s materials list.
How is it put together?
It starts at the neck. Increases at the shoulders widen the back and front; then they are knitted separately, back and forth, to shape the armholes, and joined for the body. The sleeves are picked up round the armholes and knitted down to the cuffs. The collar is knitted on its own, sideways, 15 (16, 17, 18, 19, 20) repeats of its 10 rows or until it fits the neckline, then sewn into a ring and sewn on.
Anything to watch for?
A few things. At the shoulders the pattern says to work the yarn-over increases “for total of 6 (6, 6, 6, 6 1,0) times”, which has one figure too many. The stitch counts printed after it are right: in XS to L you need the first increase round and 6 more, in XL only the first, and in 2XL none (our calculation). The 3 mm needle is printed as US 2; it is US 2½. The chart shows only the right-side rows. The needle list has no double-pointed needles, but the lower sleeves and the cuffs have too few stitches for the circulars listed (our reading). And the materials list leaves out the cable needle, scrap yarn and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweater is, in its original colour. The white dress and the earrings are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo, a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, gauge, notes and the start of the instructions, a page of instructions with the chart and key, a page with the sleeve border, the collar and a photo, a page with the end of the collar and the finishing, and Ístex’s back cover with a full-length photo.
