Good to know

1 x var — your questions, answered

What is the difference between the women’s and the men’s version?
The body colour, the length and the neck. Women’s: white (A) body and sleeves, 60 (62, 64, 66, 66) cm from the hem to the underarm, sleeves of 44 (45, 46, 47, 48) cm, and a 10 cm collar of K1, P1 rib — 3 cm in white, then beige; in the photo it stands up round the neck. Men’s: beige (B), 40 (42, 44, 46, 47) cm to the underarm, sleeves of 49 (50, 51, 52, 53) cm, and a 7 cm rib neckband folded in half to the inside over the top of the zip. The chest, the charts and the needles are the same, and both start with beige rib at the hem and cuffs.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All three are still made by Ístex: white (0001), beige (1030) and black heather (0005), all Plötulopi. Our shop sells 1030 as oatmeal heather, so go by the colour number.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — S, M, L, XL and XXL — with a chest of 92, 98, 103, 109 and 115 cm. The pattern gives no total length, only the length to the underarm: 60 to 66 cm for women (XL and XXL are both 66 cm, as printed) and 40 to 47 cm for men. The body’s 129 (137, 145, 153, 161) stitches at the pattern’s gauge come to 92 to 115 cm (our check), in line with the chest in the table, so the chest is the finished cardigan’s width — choose by the width you want it to be.
How much yarn do I need?
Plötulopi in plates of about 100 g. Women’s: white (0001) 4 (4, 5, 5, 6), beige (1030) 1 and black heather (0005) 1 in every size — 6 (6, 7, 7, 8) plates. Men’s: beige (1030) 4 (4, 4, 5, 6), black heather (0005) 1 and white (0001) 1 — 6 (6, 6, 7, 8) plates.
What does “2-ply Plötulopi” mean?
Two strands of Plötulopi held together. The pattern says to begin by winding two strands softly together and knit with them as one. The plate amounts are for the whole cardigan, both strands included.
How is the front opened, and what zip do I need?
The round begins and ends with a purl stitch at the centre front. When the knitting is done you sew twice by machine with small straight stitches into each column of purl stitches, rinse the cardigan and let it dry, then cut between the sewn rows — so you need a sewing machine. The pattern asks for a “zip that opens both ways” and gives no length; the women’s version is much longer than the men’s, so measure the finished front. The zip is sewn under the front edge twice with matching thread: first from the right side where the edge folds, then its edge is slip-stitched from the wrong side.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two small things. At the neck, the 69 (71, 73, 75, 77) yoke stitches less the 2 purl stitches and 8 decreases leave 59 (61, 63, 65, 67), but the pattern prints 61 (63, 65, 67, 69) (our calculation); any odd number works for the K1, P1 rib, so go on with the stitches you have (our reading). And in the body instructions “from edge” is printed only once, after the men’s length; it goes with the women’s length too — knit the body 60 (62, 64, 66, 66) or 40 (42, 44, 46, 47) cm from the cast-on edge (our reading). The materials list leaves out the sewing machine, the thread and the stitch holders.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
Both cardigans are. His jeans, her brown lace dress and her black tights are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge and all the instructions, a page with the four charts and the colour key, and Ístex’s back cover.
