- Men’s size · one pair
A pair of men’s mittens from Ístex’s Lopi 24, knitted in Álafosslopi on double-pointed needles. The pattern calls them “like fingerless gloves with a hood”: the four fingers are knitted only half length, and a hood — picked up across the back of the hand and cast on at the palm — is knitted like an ordinary mitten top to pull over the fingers. There is a hole at the top of the thumb to put the thumb through. One colour, dark olive green (9987), which is no longer made by Ístex; our kit uses 9987 from our remaining stock. The pattern names no designer.

Gauge
The pattern gives no gauge. The mittens are knitted in Álafosslopi on 5½ mm needles, with 4½ mm for the ribbing.
Needles
4½ mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for the cuff rib and the palm rib of the hood
5½ mm (US 9) double-pointed needles for the hand and the hood — and, by our reading, the fingers and the thumb (the pattern names no needle size for them)
You will also need
A little waste yarn in another colour for the thumb opening, a stitch holder or spare yarn for the finger stitches, markers and a tapestry needle — the instructions use them, but the pattern’s list leaves them out.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round on double-pointed needles. 32 stitches are cast on with 4½ mm needles and knitted in knit 1, purl 1 rib for 6 cm; on 5½ mm come 11 rounds, then 6 stitches are knitted with waste yarn for the thumb opening — on the right mitten at the start of the 3rd needle, on the left at the end of the 2nd — and 11 more rounds, with a marker placed for the hood. The fingers are knitted one at a time, from the little finger on the right mitten and from the index finger on the left: 10, 12, 12 and 10 stitches, with 2 stitches cast on between fingers and picked up again for the next so there are no holes; each finger is 5 rounds, cast off loosely. For the hood, with the back of the mitten towards you and the rib downwards, 16 stitches are picked up across the back of the hand on 5½ mm, in the first round below the marker, and 16 are cast on for the palm on 4½ mm; the palm is knitted in knit 1, purl 1 rib and the back in stocking stitch for 3 rounds, then all on 5½ mm for 18 rounds “or desired length to shaping”, and the top is decreased at four points and drawn together. The thumb is picked up from the opening — 6 stitches below, 5 above and 1 at each side, 13 in all — and knitted for 9 rounds; then 3 stitches above the marker are cast off and cast on again in the next round to make the hole, 3 more rounds are knitted, and the top is decreased in two rounds with a plain round between and drawn together.
Pattern from Lopi No. 24 (no. 25), Ístex. No designer is named in the pattern.
