Védís Jónsdóttir’s hooded cardigan from Ístex’s Lopi 29 is knitted in Léttlopi: a round yoke of zigzag bands and small diamonds, a small border above the moss-stitch hem and cuffs, and a hood with a band of colour along the top. It is knitted in the round and cut open at the front (a steek), then finished with moss-stitch bands and seven press studs. Two colour versions — brown (barley, black sheep and white) and green (pine green, celery green and black) — in sizes XS to XL. All six colours are still made. Our kit for the brown cardigan is sold under the name Sjöfn — it is this pattern, Var, with all the yarn.

Needles
4½ mm (US 7) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm, for the body, the yoke and the hood
3½ mm (US 4) circular needle, 80 cm, for the moss-stitch hem, the front bands and the neckband
3½ mm and 4½ mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves — 3½ mm for the cuffs
The pattern’s list also names a 4 mm (US 6) circular needle, 60 cm, which the instructions never use
You will also need
The cardigan closes with seven press studs (not included; they are in the pattern’s list). Stitch markers, stitch holders, a sewing machine for stitching the steek before it is cut, and a needle for sewing on the bands and grafting — the pattern’s list leaves these out.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up, with two purled stitches at the centre front — a steek — that are machine-stitched and cut open at the end. The hem is cast on in B with 163 (171, 179, 187, 195) stitches on the 3½ mm circular and knitted back and forth in moss stitch for 7 rows; 5 stitches at each end go on holders for the front bands, 2 steek stitches are cast on, and the body is joined into a round of 155 (163, 171, 179, 187) stitches on 4½ mm. The 8-round border chart comes first, then A; the waist is decreased by 4 stitches twice and increased again twice, and the body is knitted to 34 (36, 38, 40, 42) cm. The sleeves start with 7 rounds of moss stitch in B on 3½ mm double-pointed needles, are increased evenly to 40 (40, 40, 44, 44) stitches on 4½ mm, get the same border, and are increased at the underarm in A to 60 (62, 64, 66, 68) stitches. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke, 235 (243, 251, 259, 267) stitches, and the 50-round yoke chart, with six decrease rounds, takes it to 61 (63, 65, 67, 69); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. The two steek stitches are bound off and the steek is machine-stitched; the left band is knitted, the front is cut open, and each band — 5 moss stitches with a 3-stitch facing — is sewn on, the facing hiding the machine stitching on the inside. The neckband is knitted in B across the bands and the yoke — a first row, then 5 rows of moss stitch; the hood is knitted up from it, back and forth, with 5 moss stitches at each front edge, increased evenly in its first row and then either side of the 19 centre-back stitches, to 26 cm or the length you want. The 11-row hood chart finishes it, and the top is grafted. Press studs close the front.

Why you'll love it
- A hood with a patternThe hood is knitted up from the neckband and ends with an 11-row colour band; the top is grafted, so the band runs over the top of the head.
- Knitted round, cut openThe body is knitted in the round with two purled steek stitches at the front, which are machine-stitched and then cut; the pattern describes each step.
- Bands with a facingEach front band is 5 moss stitches with a 3-stitch facing that is sewn to the inside over the cut edge; seven press studs close the front.
- Shaped at the waistThe body is decreased by 8 stitches above the hem border and increased again before the chest.
