Good to know

Vættir — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the three. Stone blue (9418) and black (0059) are still made by Ístex; camel (1400) is no longer made. Our Vættir kit uses 1419 barley in its place. Our shop calls 9418 stone blue heather, so go by the colour number.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 87, 96, 102, 109 and 113 cm all the way round, 50, 52, 54, 56 and 58 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 44, 46, 48, 50 and 51 cm to the underarm. The body is cast on with 12 stitches more than it has at the chest — about 7 cm wider all the way round at the hem (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: stone blue (A) 8 (8, 9, 9, 10), black (B) 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) and camel (C) 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) — 11 (11, 14, 14, 15) balls. The pattern lists these for the whole sweater; the fringe is cut from the same balls.
How is the collar made?
In black. After the yoke you change to 4 mm, knit 1 round decreasing to 62 (64, 66, 70, 74) stitches and work 5 cm of K1, P1 rib. Then you change to the 5.5 mm needle, turn the work inside out, knit 6 cm more and bind off loosely. The pattern says no more about how this part sits; in the photo the collar is a black band with the fringe round its lower edge.
How is the fringe made?
Cut 14 cm lengths of each colour. Take one strand of each (3 strands), fold them in half, push the crochet hook through a stitch from the wrong side, pull the loop through, then pull the ends through the loop. There is a knot in every other knitted stitch of the collar. Folded in half, the strands hang a little under 7 cm (our calculation).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The yoke chart says which rounds to leave out in sizes S and M but does not mention XS; none of those rounds is a decrease round, so the stitch counts are the same either way — only the depth of the yoke changes. The side decreases are repeated “every 12 (13, 13, 14) cm” — four numbers for five sizes; for XL, every 14 cm fits (our reading). The collar starts on the 4 mm needle with 62 to 74 stitches, about 34–41 cm round (our calculation); the 80 cm circular in the list is longer than that, and the list also has 4 mm double-pointed needles (used for the sleeves). The crochet hook has no size, and the list leaves out stitch holders, markers and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is, with its fringe. The black trousers and the stud earring are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes, the body, the start of the sleeves, both charts and the colour key; a page with the rest of the sleeves, the yoke, the collar, the finishing and the fringe; and Ístex’s back cover.
