A long fringe in six colours hangs from the two sloping edges. One size — 154 cm across the top and 73 cm deep at the middle, without the fringe. All six colours are still made.

A stitch marker for the middle stitch, a spare needle for joining the last 7 stitches, a tapestry needle, and pins for stretching the shawl into shape (the pattern suggests them) — the pattern’s list leaves these out.
How it is knitted
Knitted back and forth on one circular needle. You cast on 345 stitches in ash heather, mark the middle stitch and knit one row; by our reading of the chart and the photos, the cast-on edge becomes the two fringed sloping sides, with the middle stitch at the point, and you knit from there towards the straight top edge. The chart shows the right half of the shawl and only the right-side rows; the left half is worked as its mirror image, and the wrong-side rows are purled, except 3 garter stitches at each end. On every right-side row the middle stitch is decreased with a double decrease (the centre stitch on top), and near each end a double decrease and a yarn over take away one stitch, so the stripes run parallel to the fringed edges and meet in a V at the centre. Seven bands of ash-heather lace — yarn overs with k2tog, ssk and the double decrease — alternate with seven bands of plain sky blue stocking stitch. The last 7 stitches are divided on two needles and joined with a three-needle bind-off. The shawl is rinsed in lukewarm water, laid flat, and stretched a little and pinned to shape. Last, a fringe of three 36 cm strands, folded in half, is knotted through every cast-on stitch with the crochet hook, starting with yellow at the middle stitch and working out to the ends of both sides.

Why you'll love it
- Stripes that meet in a VSeven bands of ash-heather lace and seven of plain sky blue run parallel to the fringed edges and meet in a point at the centre back.
- Lace and plainOnly the ash-heather bands are lace — yarn overs and decreases on the right-side rows; the sky blue bands are stocking stitch, with only the shaping at the middle stitch and near each end.
- A six-colour fringeThree 36 cm strands, folded in half, are knotted through every one of the 345 cast-on stitches, in ash heather, sky blue, lavender, yellow, blush and lime.
- Fine Einband17 stitches to 10 cm on a 4 mm needle; the shawl takes 8 balls, and four of them — lavender, yellow, blush and lime — go only into the fringe.
