Good to know

Þúfa (Lopi 24) — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Six of the seven are still made by Ístex: Álafosslopi teal heather (9967), chartreuse green heather (9965), golden heather (9964), amber heather (9971), fuchsia heather (9969) and bordeaux heather (9961). Sapphire blue heather (9968), the first stripe, is no longer made; our kit uses 1233 space blue in its place.
How big is it?
One size, 50 × 50 cm, for a 50 × 50 cm cushion filling. The pattern gives the gauge over stocking stitch — 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm — although the cover is knitted in double moss stitch.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, one ball of each of the seven colours — 7 balls. The pattern lists no separate yarn for the pompoms.
How are the pompoms made?
With two round templates, 4 cm across with a 1½ cm hole in the middle — make 16, in multiple colours. The pattern says “See how to make pompoms on page 3”, but page 3 of the PDF is blank, so that is all it gives. It does not say where to sew them; in the photo they sit along the two sewn edges.
Why does the title say Lopi 24?
Ístex has two patterns called Þúfa. This one is the striped cushion from Lopi 24 (no. 18); the other, from Ístex 25 years, is a children’s pattern.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Besides the missing pompom page: the chart has no key — by our reading the dots are the purl stitches, and it shows 52 stitches, one side of the cushion. By our calculation, at the stocking-stitch gauge 104 stitches would come to 80 cm round (40 cm across) and 84 rounds to about 47 cm, against the printed 50 × 50 cm; the pattern gives no gauge for double moss stitch. The list leaves out the pompom templates and a tapestry needle.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small copy of it, the size, materials, gauge, the stitch pattern, all the instructions and the stripe chart; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
