Good to know

Strax — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Only chocolate (0867), the main colour of the brown version, is still made. Carrot red (1418) — the last 3 rounds of the brown version’s collar — and mountain blue (1415), the blue version’s only colour, are no longer made. Ístex now makes Jöklalopi only in natural shades — white, beiges, browns, greys and black — so there is no red or blue to replace them with. Our brown kit uses 0085 oatmeal heather for the collar tip: the warmest light shade in the range, so the tip still stands out against the chocolate, but it is beige, not red. There is no kit for the blue version. The pattern calls the yarn Bulkylopi; our shop sells it as Jöklalopi — Bulky Lopi.
Can I knit the collar all in one colour?
Yes. The blue version does exactly that: all 11 rounds of the collar rib in the main colour. The pattern gives the same 9 (9, 10) hanks of main colour for both versions, collar included, so for an all-chocolate collar the chocolate is enough and you won’t need a second colour (our reading).
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 96, 105 and 113 cm, a length of 63, 65 and 67 cm from the shoulder, 41, 42 and 43 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 49, 50 and 51 cm to the underarm. The body is cast on with 92 to 108 stitches, which comes to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. It is shown on a man; the pattern itself does not say whether it is for men or women.
How much yarn do I need?
Jöklalopi in 100 g hanks. Brown: chocolate (0867) 9 (9, 10) and carrot red (1418) 1 in every size — 10 hanks in S and M, 11 in L. Blue: mountain blue (1415) 9 (9, 10).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. By our reading, “cast off 6 (6) 8 sts at each side” at the underarms is the total at each side — 3 (3, 4) from the back and 3 (3, 4) from the front — which gives the printed 40 (44, 46) stitches for the back and the front, and matches the sleeve caps. The sleeves are increased one stitch at a time, at the start of every 4th round, not in pairs. The instructions don’t say which of the two 9 mm circulars is used where, and the materials list leaves out a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters are — the brown version in one photo, the blue version in the other, on the same man. The canvas shoulder bag and the jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the blue version, a page with a small photo of the brown version, the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge and all the instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
