Védís Jónsdóttir’s Stapi from Ístex’s Lopi 28 is a round-yoke cardigan in Álafosslopi that closes with a zip with two sliders. It is knitted in the round from the bottom up on 6 mm needles, with two purl stitches at the centre front that are machine-stitched and cut open at the end (a steek). Cables run up each side of the zip, up the centre back and up each sleeve, and the yoke has stars and diamonds in three colours; the leaflet notes that part of the pattern comes from an old Álafoss pattern. Two colour versions — beige (oatmeal, white and black sheep) and blue (light indigo, black and ash) — in sizes XS to XXL. All six colours are still made.

Needles
6 mm (US 10) circular needles, 40 and 80 cm, for the body and the yoke

4½ mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles for the sleeves — 4½ mm for the cuffs
You will also need
A zip with two sliders (in the pattern’s list, which gives no length). A cable needle — the cable key uses one, but the list leaves it out — and stitch holders, a sewing machine for stitching the steek before it is cut, sewing thread to match for the zip, and a tapestry needle for grafting.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up, with two purl stitches at the centre front — a steek — that are machine-stitched and cut open at the end. The body is cast on in A with 123 (129, 135, 141, 147, 153) stitches on the 4½ mm circular; one knit row back makes a ridge, and 6 rows of knit 1, purl 1 rib are knitted back and forth. On 6 mm, 2 purl stitches are cast on and the body is joined into a round of 125 (131, 137, 143, 149, 155). Three 8-stitch cables — 4 knit stitches between 2 purl stitches each side, crossed every 4th round — are set: one on each side of the front opening, 3 stitches in from the purl stitch, and one at the centre back. The body is knitted in stocking stitch to 41 (41, 43, 43, 45, 45) cm, or the length you want. The sleeves are cast on in A with 34 (34, 36, 36, 38, 38) stitches on 4½ mm double-pointed needles — one ridge, then 6 rounds of rib — and on 6 mm a cable is set up the middle; 1 stitch is increased after the first and before the last stitch of the round right after the rib, then every 9th round, 7 (8, 8, 9, 9, 10) times in all, to 48 (50, 52, 54, 56, 58), and the sleeve is knitted to 50 (50, 52, 52, 54, 54) cm, or the length you want. Body and sleeves are joined in A for the round yoke, 187 (199, 205, 211, 223, 229) stitches, and the 39-round yoke chart, with four decrease rounds, takes it to 65 (69, 71, 73, 77, 79); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. For the neckband the purl stitches are bound off and one round in A on 4½ mm decreases to 61 (61, 63, 63, 65, 67) stitches; it is then knitted back and forth — 8 rows of purl 1, knit 1 rib, a knit row from the wrong side to fold on, and 5 rows of stocking stitch in C (beige) or B (blue) — and bound off loosely. The underarms are grafted; the steek is machine-stitched twice through each column of purl stitches and cut between; the zip is sewn in by hand under the folded front edges, and the neckband is folded to the inside, hiding the top of the zip.
