Skammdegi — Knitting pattern
Original design by: Védís Jónsdóttir
Skammdegi (“Short Days”) captures the quiet glow of Icelandic winter. The body and sleeves are knit in the round and then joined for a charted yoke. A deep ribbed neckband is shaped with short rows across the back shoulders for a snug, comfortable fit. Finish by folding the neckband to the inside and securing it neatly.

Knitting needles & notions
- Circular needles 5.5 mm (40 & 80 cm)
- Circular needles 4.5 mm (40 & 80 cm)
- Double pointed needles 4.5 mm and 5.5 mm
Gauge
14 sts and 19 rows = 10 × 10 cm in St st using 5.5 mm needles and 2‑ply Plötulopi.
Construction
Work the body in color B 3 cm 1×1 rib, then change to 5.5 mm and chart 1; increase 6 sts in first round to 136/152/168/184. Continue in color A to the listed length. Knit sleeves to length, increasing as set. Join pieces for the yoke and work chart 2 with evenly spaced decreases to 78/84/90/96 sts. For the neckband, change to 4.5 mm and color B, decrease evenly, then work 1×1 rib for 3 cm. Shape with short rows at the back shoulders, then continue in the round until the front rib measures 8 cm. Fold the neckband to the inside and stitch down. Graft underarms and block.
