Good to know

Sjóna — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
The white version’s white (0051), black sheep (0052) and straw (1418) are all still made. In the moss green version, hazel (1401) is no longer made — our moss green kit uses 0867 chocolate heather instead; the other eight colours are still made, and the photo shows the original hazel. The black child’s version’s four colours are still made. In the violet child’s version, lilac (1413) and orange (1410) are no longer made, and we have no kit for it. Our shop’s names differ a little (it calls 0054 light ash heather), so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Adults: S, M, L and XL, with a chest of 89, 98, 107 and 115 cm all the way round. Men’s: 41 to 47 cm from the hem to the underarm, sleeves 50 to 53 cm. Women’s: 38 to 44 cm, sleeves 46 to 49 cm; the white short sweater is 30 to 36 cm to the underarm. Children: 8–10 and 10–12 years, chest 80 and 89 cm, 34 and 38 cm to the underarm (the short violet sweater 26 and 30 cm), sleeves 38 and 42 cm. The pattern gives no total lengths.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. White: white (A) 6 (6, 7, 8), black sheep (B) 2 (2, 3, 3), straw (C) 1 (1, 2, 2) — 9 (9, 12, 13) balls. Moss green: moor (A) 6 (7, 8, 9) and 1 ball of each of the eight contrasts — 14 (15, 16, 17) balls. Black child’s: black (A) 5 (6), ash (B) 2, dark grey (C) and white (D) 1 each — 9 (10) balls. Violet child’s: violet (A) 4 (5), black (B) 2 and 1 ball of each of the six others — 12 (13) balls. The leaflet gives one set of amounts for each version; for the moss green it does not say whether they are for men’s or women’s lengths.
Where do the borders go?
Moss green: a band of 15 rounds (13 in size S) from chart 1B, above the hem and cuff rib. Black child’s: a 10-round band (chart 1C) in the same places. White: a band of 14 rounds (13 in M, 12 in S) from chart 1A, knitted when 5–6 cm are left to the underarm, on the body and on the sleeves, so it sits just below the yoke. Violet child’s: a 12-round band (chart 1D) above the sleeve rib only; its cuff rib is lagoon.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The moss green materials list is headed “Moss greet sweater”. On page 3 the black child’s border chart is headed “CHART 1D”, like the violet sleeve chart below it; the text calls it chart 1C, and its key is the black version’s. The adult yoke charts mark some rounds to skip “in size S” or “S, M” without saying men’s or women’s. The materials list leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are — the white version on the woman and the moss green on the man. Her blue jeans and his dark trousers are not. The children’s versions are shown only in a small photo inside the PDF.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the white and the moss green sweaters; a page with a small photo of all four versions, the sizes, the materials for all four, gauge, notes and the instructions; a page with the rest of the instructions and the children’s charts 2C, 2D, 1C (headed 1D) and 1D with their keys; and a page with the adult charts 2A, 2B, 1A and 1B with their keys and Ístex’s address.
