Good to know

Saga (Lopi 27) — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Saga 2: yes — chocolate (0867), white (0051), black heather (0005), dark grey (0058), light beige (0086), ash (0054), acorn (0053), light grey (0056) and oatmeal (0085) are all still made by Ístex. Saga 1: orange (1410), mustard (9264), camel (1400) and hazel (1401) are no longer made; our Saga 1 kit uses 1704 apricot, 9426 golden heather, 1419 barley and 0867 chocolate heather in their place. Bottle green (1405), garnet red (1409), lagoon (9423), violet (1414), grape (9432), navy (9420), crimson (9434), lapis blue (1403) and rust (9427) are still made. Our shop calls 0054 light ash heather and 0056 ash heather, and adds “heather” to several other names, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L — with a chest of 85, 94 and 103 cm all the way round and a lower edge of 89, 98 and 107 cm. Body and sleeves are both 34 (35, 36) cm to the underarm; the sleeves are ¾ length. The pattern gives no total length.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Saga 1: 2 balls each of bottle green (A) and navy (H), 1 (1, 2) each of garnet red, lagoon and crimson, and 1 of each of the eight others — 15 (15, 18) balls. Saga 2: 2 (2, 3) of chocolate (A), 2 (3, 3) of black heather, 2 each of white, light beige and ash, and 1 of each of the other four — 14 (15, 16) balls. You also need a zipper with two slides.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. Two stitches cast on at the centre front of the body are purled all the way up the body and the yoke. When the knitting is done, weave in the ends but pull those next to the purl stitches through to the right side, sew twice by machine with small straight stitches through each chain of purl stitches, and cut between the sewn rows. The zipper is sewn in by hand under the front edges, twice, with thread in a matching colour — first from the right side where the edge folds, then slip-stitched from the wrong side. The pattern gives no zipper length.
How is the neckband finished?
After the yoke the purl stitches are bound off and 20 (22, 24) stitches are decreased, leaving 68 (72, 76). The neckband is knitted back and forth on 3.5 mm: 7 rows of moss stitch in colour A, one purl row from the right side, then 6 rows of stocking stitch in lagoon (Saga 1) or oatmeal (Saga 2), and bound off. You can fold it in half to the inside and slip-stitch it down, or leave it to roll — the neck will then be wider.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The finishing says to “slip stitch around every other circle in yoke pattern” — crimson on Saga 1, chocolate on Saga 2 — without saying more about how. The pattern gives no zipper length, and the list leaves out stitch holders, a tapestry needle and a sewing machine.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans are. The long dark arm warmers, the rolled-up denim shorts, the black tights and the black boots in the Saga 2 photo, and the navy top, the denim skirt and the black tights in the Saga 1 photo, are not. The zippers are not included.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of Saga 2; a page with a small photo of Saga 1, the sizes, the materials for both colourways, gauge, notes and all the instructions; a page with the two Saga 1 charts and their key; and a page with the two Saga 2 charts, their key and Ístex’s address.
