Good to know

Rósn — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For the white version, yes: white (0051) and grey (0057) are both still made by Ístex. For the blue version, five of the six are — the yoke colours midnight blue (0709), fuchsia (9969), golden (9964), amber (9971) and chartreuse (9965). Sapphire blue (9968), the main colour — the whole cape, the cables, the moss edges, three rounds in the yoke and the outside of the collar — is no longer made. Our blue kit uses 1233 space blue in its place: brighter and more vivid than the deep, shaded blue in the photo, but still clearly apart from the midnight blue in the yoke. Our shop calls 9969, 9964, 9971 and 9965 fuchsia heather, golden heather, amber heather and chartreuse green heather, and 0057 grey heather, so go by the colour numbers.
The chart is printed in blue — how do I knit the white version?
The key gives two codes for each colour, blue first and white second. For the white cape, knit A and B (sapphire blue and midnight blue) in white, and C to F (fuchsia, golden, amber and chartreuse) in grey. The light grey squares are not a colour — they mean “no stitch”, where stitches have been decreased. Squares with a circle are purled (the key calls them “p st”), in the colour the square stands for. The collar is white inside and out; in the blue version its inner half is amber.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L. The pattern gives only two measurements: 166, 175 and 184 cm round the lower edge, and 54, 56 and 58 cm from the hem to the neckline. There is no chest measurement — the cape hangs loose from the yoke. You can make it longer or shorter: the pattern says to knit the cape to 35 (37, 39) cm “or as long as preferred” before the yoke.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. Blue: sapphire blue (9968, A) 5 (5, 6) and one ball each of midnight blue, fuchsia, golden, amber and chartreuse — 10 (10, 11) balls. White: white (0051, A–B) 5 (5, 6) and grey (0057, C–F) 1 (2, 2) — 6 (7, 8) balls. In the white version the white does the work of two chart colours and the inside of the collar, so there is not much white to spare (our estimate) — keep to the pattern’s gauge.
Which zip do I need?
A two-way separating zip — the pattern says “zipper with 2 slides” but gives no length. By our calculation it is roughly 58 (60, 62) cm: the 54 (56, 58) cm from hem to neckline, plus the outer half of the folded collar, which the zip runs up to. Measure your finished, dried cape before you buy it.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Only at the yoke. The cape is knitted back and forth up to the yoke, so the front is already open there. For the yoke, 2 purl stitches are cast on at the front and the work is joined in the round. At the end you sew twice through each of those stitches by machine with small straight stitches, cut between the sewn rows and sew in the zip with matching thread.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The side decreases (“dec on both sides of cable … total 12 times”) are, by our reading, made only beside the two side cables, 4 stitches each time (216 − 168 = 48 = 12 × 4); the pattern gives no spacing — by our calculation about every 5 rows, kept on right-side rows (for example alternately every 4th and 6th row), as the decreases are written for the right side. By our reading (the pattern says only “from right cable”), the arm slits sit 8 (10, 12) stitches beyond the two front cables, on the side away from the zip. The cable charts say “rnd”, but the cape is knitted in rows, so on wrong-side rows knit the purl stitches and purl the knit stitches. Round 1 of the yoke chart is printed “171 (183) 159 sts”; for L read 195, as in the text. While the slits are worked, each row is knitted with three separate balls of the main colour — one for each section between the slits — so wind off two small balls. And the materials list leaves out the cable needle, a sewing machine and thread, and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The capes are. Under the blue cape, the dark top and the jeans are not. With the white cape, the wide belt threaded through the arm slits, the dress under it and the bracelet are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (the blue version), a page with the materials for both versions, the sizes, gauge and all the instructions, with a small photo of the white version, a page with the yoke chart, the two cable charts and the colour key, and Ístex’s back cover.
