Good to know

Rökkur (Lopi 33) — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. White (0051), midnight blue (0709), denim heather (0010) and grey heather (0057) are all still made by Ístex. The chart key prints denim heather as a teal square; in the photos it is a mid blue.
Is this the same Rökkur as the one in Lopi 24?
No. This Rökkur is from Lopi 33 (no. 5): a patterned cardigan with a shawl collar by Bergrós Kjartansdóttir. The Rökkur in Lopi 24 is a different pattern — a men’s zip cardigan in moss stitch.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — XS/S, M and L/XL — with a chest of 87, 96 and 110 cm all the way round, 52, 52 and 54 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 52, 53 and 54 cm to the underarm. The sleeves are knitted to about 61, 63 and 64 cm, including 18 to 20 cm of rib, which is folded back in the photo.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: white (A) 7 (7, 8), midnight blue (B) 3, denim heather (C) 2 and grey heather (D) 2 — 14 (14, 15) balls.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with 2 purl stitches at the centre front, and the V-neck is bound off at each side of them in the yoke. At the end you sew twice by machine through each chain of purl stitches with small straight stitches and cut between the sewn rows, then pick up the bands.
How is the shawl collar made?
As part of the front bands. With the 6 mm circular, you pick up 1 stitch in every knitted row from the hem to the centre back of the neck, decrease a quarter of them on the next row (p1, *p2, p2tog*), and work 5 rows of K2, P2 rib. Then short rows, starting where the V-neck begins, with increases at first and then without, build the band up into half a collar, about 14 cm deep at the back of the neck. The other front is worked the same way with the same number of stitches, with 5 buttonholes (a yarn over and k2tog or p2tog) in its third row, and the two halves are sewn together at the centre back.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The stitch count after the yoke decreases is printed as 49 (73, 97). By our count of the charts the yoke is 42 rounds, and with the V-neck bound off every 4th round that leaves about 6 stitches more in every size (our calculation). If you have more, decrease the extra stitches in the last round before binding off, to reach the printed 48 (52, 54) (our suggestion). The chart is printed sideways and marks where each size starts on the right front, the back and the sleeves; the left front is worked as its mirror image. One line says “7 (7, 9) L sts” — the L is a stray letter. The materials list leaves out a sewing machine, stitch holders, markers and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigan is. The black T-shirt under it and the jeans are not. The second photo is a close-up of the knitting.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, the body, sleeves and yoke, the steek, the start of the collar and a close-up photo of the knitting; a page with the rest of the collar and bands, the finishing and the chart, printed sideways; and Ístex’s back cover.
