Good to know

Ró — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Seven of the eight are still made by Ístex. Pullover: grey (9102), ash (1026) and winter blue (1432); denim (1052), the top of the yoke and the neckband, is no longer made — our grey kit uses 2022 blues blue instead. Cardigan: white (0001), beige (1030), spruce green (1421) and clover green (1423). Our shop calls 1026 light ash heather, 1432 winter blue heather, 1030 oatmeal heather, 1421 spruce green heather and 1423 clover green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — S, M, L and XL — for both garments, with a chest of 90, 96, 102 and 110 cm all the way round (it matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge to within a centimetre — our check), 36, 38, 40 and 42 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 46, 47, 48 and 49 cm.
How much yarn do I need?
The same in every size, for either garment: Plötulopi in 100 g plates — 3 plates of the main colour (A) and 1 plate each of B, C and D.
How is the Plötulopi used?
The pattern casts on with two strands held together, knits everything with one strand, and binds off with two strands again.
Which needle size do I use?
The gauge is 19 stitches and 26 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch with one strand. The gauge line names 5.5 mm needles, but the materials list has only 4.5 mm and every instruction uses 4.5 mm; the chest sizes match the stitch counts at 19 stitches to 10 cm, so knit a swatch and match the gauge (our reading).
How is the cardigan different?
Its hem rib is worked back and forth; then two stitches are cast on and purled all the way up the front, and it is knitted in the round like the pullover, with its own chart. At the end the front is sewn twice by machine through the purl stitches and cut open between the seams. The borders are crocheted with a 5 mm hook: four rows of single crochet in white on each side, with eight buttonholes in the right border, then a last row in spruce green from the bottom of the right border, round the neck and down the left.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The gauge needle, as above. In the pullover’s XL sleeves, 74 stitches less 10 underarm stitches leaves 64, but the text says 63 — and the yoke total uses 63. The underarm stitches on the body and the sleeves don’t always match — pullover body 8 (9, 10, 12), sleeves 8 (8, 9, 10) — so there is a stitch or two to ease in when you graft. The cardigan’s rib says “Rnd 1 (from WS)” — it is a row. The list leaves out stitch holders, markers, a tapestry needle and, for the cardigan, a sewing machine and thread.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The pullover and the cardigan are, with the cardigan’s buttons (not included). With the cardigan, the black top, the blue jeans and the earrings are not; with the pullover, the grey jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the cardigan; a page with small photos of both garments, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and the instructions for both; a page with both yoke charts and their keys and the cardigan’s finishing and crocheted borders; and Ístex’s back cover.
