Good to know

Nönn — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
No — both are no longer made by Ístex: pumpkin (9436, printed “Pumkin”), the orange, and flame scarlet (9437), the red. Our Nönn kit uses 1704 apricot in place of pumpkin — close to the warm orange in the photo — and 9434 crimson red in place of flame scarlet: a little cooler and bluer than the slightly orange red in the photos, so the orange and the red stand apart a little more. You can also knit it in any two Léttlopi colours; the amounts stay the same.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 36, 38, 40 and 42 — with a chest of 98, 100, 102 and 104 cm, 59, 61, 63 and 65 cm long to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 41, 42, 43 and 44 cm to the underarm. The body is cast on with 154 to 160 stitches, which comes to about 99 to 103 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The sizes are only 2 cm apart, so choose by the chest measurement.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls, the same amount of each colour: A pumpkin 12 (14, 14, 16) and B flame scarlet 12 (14, 14, 16) — 24 balls for size 36, 28 for 38 and 40, and 32 for 42, which is 1.2 to 1.6 kg of Léttlopi.
How is the brioche knitted?
Every round is worked twice. Round 1, with
How are the hem and cuffs made?
As a double layer. You knit 12 rounds of stocking stitch in A and put the stitches on a holder, turn the work inside out, pick up stitches in B from the cast-on edge (one from every purl) and knit 12 rounds, then turn it so A is outside. In the first brioche round each knit and slip stitch is worked as one orange and one red stitch together, which joins the two layers.
How long will it be?
The pattern gives 59 (61, 63, 65) cm to the centre front neck. By our arithmetic from the row gauge, the hem, body and yoke as written can come out a few centimetres longer — up to about 6 cm (our calculation). Brioche length depends a lot on your row gauge and stretches lengthwise, so measure as you go: the pattern lets you knit the body “until desired length”.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The sleeve increases are hard to follow: by our reading, each time you increase one stitch in the orange round and one in the red round (2 stitches, one new rib), every 6th round, alternately at the start and the end of the round — 11 times takes you from 38 (38, 40, 40) to the printed 60 (60, 62, 62) stitches. At the underarms the body stitches are cast off but the sleeve stitches are held, so “join underarm sts together” means sewing the held sleeve stitches to the cast-off edge, not grafting (our reading). And there are typos: “TENSON” is tension, “Pumkin” is pumpkin, “gain one” is increase one, the yoke’s “4 rows” are rounds, and “two pointed needles” are double-pointed needles. The materials list leaves out stitch holders, stitch markers, the extra needle for the decreases and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
Both photos show the same sweater, in the original pumpkin and flame scarlet — first worn orange side out, then red side out. The jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, gauge and all the instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
