Marbendill — a merman, a being that lives in the sea; “a colorful loner”, as the pattern puts it. Védís Jónsdóttir’s round-yoke sweater from Ístex’s Lopi 43 is knitted with one strand of Plötulopi and one of Einband held together: black for the ground, and ash Plötulopi with sky blue, lime, crimson or orange Einband for the pattern. Every pattern stitch is purled, so the colours sit as purl bumps on the smooth black knitting. The yoke has bands of all four colours around large black diamond shapes, with a small check band above each cuff. Sizes XS to 2XL, each with a shorter and a longer body and sleeve. All seven colours are still made.

Stitch holders for the underarm stitches, stitch markers and a tapestry needle for grafting and weaving in — the instructions use them, but the pattern’s list leaves them out.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the bottom up, with one strand of Plötulopi and one of Einband held together: black cosmos and black (A+C) for the ground, and ash Plötulopi (B) with sky blue, lime, crimson or orange Einband for the pattern. The body is cast on on the 4.5 mm circular, worked in 3 cm of K1, P1 rib and then plain on 5.5 mm, with no shaping, to 35 (36, 37, 38, 39, 40) cm for the shorter length or 40 (41, 42, 43, 44, 45) cm for the longer. The sleeves start with 3 cm of rib on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, then a 10-round check band from chart 1 on 5.5 mm, and are increased — evenly in the first chart round, by 1 stitch in the first round after the chart, then at the underarm — to 55 (57, 61, 63, 65, 67) stitches. Body and sleeves are joined for the round yoke: a 48-round chart with seven decrease rounds, from 210 (220, 230, 240, 250, 260) stitches to 63 (66, 69, 72, 75, 78); the smaller sizes leave out marked rounds. In both charts every coloured stitch is purled. The neckband is K1, P1 rib on 4.5 mm, raised at the back with three pairs of short rows (wrap and turn), worked until it measures 4 cm at the front and bound off loosely. The underarms are grafted.

Why you'll love it
- Purled coloursEvery stitch of the pattern colours is purled, so the yoke and the cuff bands sit as purl bumps on the smooth black knitting.
- Two yarns as oneBlack cosmos Plötulopi with black Einband for the ground; ash Plötulopi with one Einband colour for each pattern colour.
- Two lengthsThe body comes in a shorter (35–40 cm) and a longer (40–45 cm) length to the underarm, and the sleeves in 43–48 or 47–52 cm.
- A higher back neckThree pairs of short rows in the ribbed neckband make it higher at the back than at the front.
