Good to know

Manitoba — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Six of the eight are still made by Ístex: straw (1418), white (0051), frostbite (1417), celery green (9421), spring green (1406) and violet (1414). Sun yellow (1411) and lilac (1413) are no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 1703 mimosa in place of sun yellow — the yellow dots of the border and the yellow round in the flowers — and 1700 air blue in place of lilac, so the light part of the flowers is a blue rather than a lilac. You can also choose any other Léttlopi colours; the amounts stay the same.
Which size should I knit?
Six sizes, XS to XXL, with a chest of 90, 101.5, 112.5, 120, 131.5 and 142.5 cm, 35.5 to 38 cm from hem to underarm, sleeves of 44.5 to 47.5 cm, and a total length of 57.5 to 63 cm (from the pattern’s measurement diagram). The body’s 144 (162, 180, 192, 210, 228) stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The diagram calls it a women’s pullover.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: straw 6 (7, 7, 8, 8, 9), white 2 (2, 2, 3, 3, 3), and 1 ball each of the six other colours — 14 balls in XS, 15 in S and M, 17 in L and XL, 18 in XXL.
What is on the techniques page?
How to make and close the short rows with yarn overs that raise the back of the neck, how yarn dominance works in stranded knitting and which colour to hold closer to the needle tips, and an Icelandic bind-off, which the page calls a natural choice for neckbands, cuffs and hems. The instructions themselves just say to bind off loosely.
Anything to watch for?
One misprint. On the neckband the pattern decreases 14 stitches in size M and prints the result as 58; it is 68 — 82 minus 14 — which also matches the 42.5 cm neck in the measurement diagram (our calculation). The other sizes are right. In the yoke, the smaller sizes skip marked rounds of the chart, and the decrease rounds give the stitch count for every size.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweater is, in its original colours, including sun yellow and lilac. The jeans, the earrings, the ring and the white shoe in the full-length photo are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 5 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, instructions, the colour key and the border chart; a page with the measurement diagram and the yoke chart; the techniques page; and Ístex’s back cover.
