Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 38 & 39 — your questions, answered

What are No. 38 and No. 39?
Two different garments printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials list, sizes, instructions and charts. No. 38 is a pullover in ash heather, in sizes S to XL with sleeve lengths for women and for men; in the photo a man wears it. No. 39 is a cardigan in midnight blue with buttons, in sizes S, M and L with one sleeve length; in the photo a woman wears it.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
For No. 38, yes: ash heather (0054), black heather (0005) and dark gray (0058) are all still made by Ístex — our shop calls them light ash heather, black heather and dark grey heather. For No. 39, only midnight blue (0709) is still made. Cornflower (9303), scarlet (0078), apple green (9212) and goldenrod (9213) are no longer made; our midnight blue cardigan kit (Austri) uses 1232 arctic exposure, 0047 happy red, 9983 apple green and 9964 golden heather in their place.
Which size should I knit?
No. 38 comes in S, M, L and XL, with a chest of 100, 108, 115 and 123 cm — the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge comes to the same (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. It is 65 to 72 cm long to the centre front neck, with sleeves of 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women or 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. No. 39 comes in S, M and L, with a printed chest of 105, 111 and 117 cm, a length of 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck and sleeves of 40, 41 and 43 cm; it has no size XL.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. No. 38: ash heather 6 (7, 7, 8), black heather 1 (1, 2, 2) and dark gray 1 — 8 (9, 10, 11) balls in all. No. 39: midnight blue 7 (8, 8) and 1 ball each of cornflower, scarlet, apple green and goldenrod — 11 (12, 12) balls.
Do I have to cut No. 39?
As the pattern is written, yes. The moss-stitch border is knitted back and forth; then the body is joined into a round with two purl stitches at the centre front. At the end you sew two rows of machine stitching in the centre of each column of purl stitches and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth in rows instead, with a knit stitch at each edge — then there is nothing to cut (our reading).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. Both parts say “Read Tension on page 3”, and No. 39 says “see illustration on page 3” for the machine stitching, but page 3 of this leaflet holds only No. 38’s charts; it must mean a page of the Lopi 18 book (our reading) — the tension is the one printed, 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. In No. 39 the body puts 10 (11, 12) stitches on the first underarm holder and 11 (10, 13) on the second, and the sleeves 10 (11, 12). Its neckband count, 63 (63, 67), adds up when the two purl stitches at the cut edges are not counted (our calculation). The needle lists have no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 or 46 stitches — about 31 to 35 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Who designed it?
The leaflet names no designer. Both garments are marked “Adapted by: Védís Jónsdóttir.”
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two garments are, in their original colours: the man wears No. 38 and the woman No. 39 (the numbers are printed beside them). The jeans and her red polo neck are not part of the pattern, and the buttons are not included.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both garments; a page with a small photo, No. 38’s materials, sizes, tension, notes and all its instructions; a page with No. 38’s two charts and key; a page with a small photo, No. 39’s materials, sizes, tension, notes and all its instructions; a page with No. 39’s two charts and key; and Ístex’s back cover.
