Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 35 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. Acorn (0053), white (0051) and oatmeal (0085) are all still made by Ístex. Our shop calls 0053 acorn heather and 0085 oatmeal heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm — the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge comes to the same (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. It is 62 to 72 cm long to the centre front neck, with sleeves of 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women or 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body is knitted to 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm before the yoke. Compare with a sweater that fits you the way you like.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: acorn 7 (8, 8, 9, 9), white 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) and oatmeal 1 — 9 (10, 11, 12, 12) balls in all. The leaflet gives one amount per size for both sleeve lengths.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. “Read Tension on page 3” must mean a page of the Lopi 18 book — page 3 of this leaflet holds the end of the instructions (our reading); the tension is the one printed, 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. When the yoke is joined, the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back in every size; the total is right. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 or 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Who designed it?
The leaflet names no designer. It says the sweater is based on designs from The Handknitting Association of Iceland and was adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is, in its original colours. The light beige trousers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, notes, the body, the start of the sleeves, both charts and the key; a page with the rest of the sleeves, the yoke, the neckband and making up; and Ístex’s back cover.
