Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 34 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only midnight blue (0709) is still made by Ístex. Fire tweed (9738), grass (9301), aquamarine (9214), goldenrod (9213), copper (9384) and bright fuchsia (9010) are no longer made. Our kit for this pattern uses 9962 ruby red heather for fire tweed — a deep red of about the same depth, but a clearer, stronger red than the brick red in the photo, and a plain heather without the tweed’s small green, orange and purple flecks; 1231 garden green for grass — much darker and duller than the vivid emerald in the photo; 1233 space blue for aquamarine — clearly darker and more violet than the bright azure; 9964 golden heather for goldenrod — a mustard gold, clearly deeper and more orange than the bright yellow; 9971 amber heather for copper — a rust orange, clearly redder and brighter than the ochre brown the copper shows in the photo; and 1240 dark magenta for bright fuchsia — much brighter and pinker than the muted violet-magenta in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, XS to L, with a chest of 102, 106, 111 and 115 cm, a length of 66, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 39, 40, 41 and 42 cm to the underarm. The body’s 132 (138, 144, 150) stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. In the photo it reaches well below the hips. There is no larger size, so compare the chest with a sweater that fits you the way you like.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: fire tweed (9738) 5 (6, 6, 7), midnight blue (0709) 2, and 1 ball each of grass, aquamarine, goldenrod, copper and bright fuchsia — 12 balls in XS, 13 in S and M, 14 in L. Each bright colour is used for only a few rounds of the yoke and the sleeve border.
How do the bright bands work?
In both charts the five bright colours share one symbol (:), and the colour for each group of rounds is printed beside the chart. Up the yoke the bands run grass, aquamarine, goldenrod, copper and bright fuchsia, then the same again, then aquamarine, goldenrod, copper, bright fuchsia and grass at the neck. Apart from the first few rounds, where the fire tweed still shows, no round of the yoke uses more than two colours: midnight blue and one bright colour (a few rounds are all midnight blue or all the bright colour). The sleeve border works the same way, with fire tweed at its top and bottom. The key says to change colour at random — not always at the beginning of the round — so the colour changes don’t line up in one place (our reading).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. On the sleeves the pattern says to cast on 34 stitches and “inc 6 sts evenly spaced on first rnd, 36(36:36:36) sts” — but 34 and 6 make 40. 36 is the right count: it fits the chart’s 6-stitch repeat and every count after it, so increase just 2 stitches on that round (our calculation). When the yoke is joined, the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back in every size; the total is right, so knit it as written. “Read Tension on page 3” must mean a page of the Lopi 18 book — page 3 of this leaflet has no tension section (our reading); the tension is the one printed, 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. By our calculation from the row gauge, the body and yoke come to about 3 cm less than the printed length to the front neck; the body is knitted to a set length, 43 (44, 45, 46) cm, before the yoke, so if you want the full length, add it there (our suggestion). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 36 stitches — about 28 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Who designed it?
The leaflet names no designer. It says the sweater is based on designs from The Handknitting Association of Iceland and was adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is, in its original colours, with the flecked fire tweed. The black trousers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, the start of the body, both charts and the key, a page with the sleeves, yoke, collar and making up, and Ístex’s back cover.
