Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 32 & 33 — your questions, answered

What are No. 32 and No. 33?
Two garments printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials list, sizes and instructions. No. 32 is a pullover in forest heather; No. 33 is a cardigan in light beige that closes with buttons. They share the same border and yoke charts, but the key swaps the two contrast colours: the pullover’s motifs are mostly white with some black heather, and the cardigan’s mostly black heather with some white. In the photo a man wears No. 32 and a woman No. 33; both give sleeve lengths for women and for men.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
All but one. Forest heather (0014), the pullover’s main colour, is no longer made by Ístex; our green pullover kit (Askur) uses 1231 garden green in its place. White (0051), black heather (0005) and light beige (0086) are still made — our shop calls 0086 light beige heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL. No. 32 has a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm — the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge comes to the same (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. No. 33’s printed chest is 105, 109, 114, 118 and 123 cm. Both are 62 to 72 cm long to the centre front neck, with sleeves of 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women or 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. Compare with a sweater or cardigan that fits you the way you like.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. No. 32: forest heather 6 (6, 7, 7, 8), white 2 and black heather 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) — 9 (9, 10, 10, 12) balls in all. No. 33: light beige 6 (7, 7, 8, 9), black heather 2 and white 1 (1, 1, 1, 2) — 9 (10, 10, 11, 13) balls. The leaflet gives one amount per size for both sleeve lengths.
Do I have to cut No. 33?
As the pattern is written, yes. The welt is knitted back and forth; then the body is joined into a round with two purl stitches at the centre front. At the end you sew two rows of machine stitching in the centre of each column of purl stitches and cut between them, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also says the body, sleeves and yoke can be knitted back and forth in rows instead, with a knit stitch at each edge — then there is nothing to cut (our reading).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. Both parts say “Read Tension on page 3”, and No. 33 says “see illustration on page 3” for the machine stitching, but page 3 of this leaflet holds only No. 32’s charts; it must mean a page of the Lopi 18 book (our reading) — the tension is the one printed, 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. In No. 33 the body puts 10 (11, 12, 11, 12) stitches on each underarm holder and the sleeves 9 (10, 11, 10, 11). Its neckband count, 71 (71, 71, 75, 75), adds up when the two purl stitches at the cut edges are not counted (our calculation). The needle lists have no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 or 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Who designed it?
The leaflet names no designer. Under both numbers it says they are based on designs from The Handknitting Association of Iceland and were adapted by Védís Jónsdóttir.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The two garments are, in their original colours: the man wears No. 32 and the woman No. 33 (the numbers are printed beside them). The black trousers, her black polo neck and the dark top showing at his neck are not part of the pattern, and the buttons are not included.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both garments; a page with a small photo, No. 32’s materials, sizes, tension, notes and all its instructions; a page with No. 32’s two charts and key; a page with a small photo, No. 33’s materials, sizes, tension, notes and most of its instructions; a page with the rest of them and No. 33’s three charts and key; and Ístex’s back cover.
