Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 16 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Two of the three are still made by Ístex: black (0059) — the body, sleeves, ribs and neckband — and light denim heather (0008), the pale blue of the diamonds and the border. The mid blue, cadet blue (0098), is no longer made; our Árvakur kit uses 9958 light indigo in its place. The leaflet prints the colour names next to the numbers. Note that 0059 is black; black heather, as Ístex calls it in other Lopi 18 leaflets, is a different colour, 0005.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes, S to XL, with a chest of 100, 108, 115 and 123 cm and a length of 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women and 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men, and the body is 40 (42, 43, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The body’s 130 to 160 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: black 6 (7, 7, 8), cadet blue 2 and light denim heather 1 in every size — 9 (10, 10, 11) balls. The pattern gives one set of amounts for both sleeve lengths.
Is this the pattern of the Árvakur kit?
Yes. Árvakur is our shop’s name for the kit; the leaflet prints no name, only Lopi 18 no. 16. The kit has the yarn for size XL, with 9958 light indigo in place of cadet blue.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The sleeve shaping reads “inc 1 st at beg and end of 2nd rnd and thereafter every: Woman’s: 8th rnd Man’s: 9th rnd 6(7:6:7)times, 54(56:60:62)sts”; the printed count comes out when the 2nd-round increase is counted on its own, before the 6 (7, 6, 7) (our calculation). Each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 40 to 46 stitches — too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need 6 mm double-pointed needles, which the list leaves out (our reading). The neckband instructions have a typo, “needels”. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The light T-shirt showing at his neck and his jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, the first instructions, both charts and the key; a page with the rest of the sleeves, the yoke, the neckband and making up; and Ístex’s back cover.
