Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 5 & 6 — your questions, answered

Is this pattern No. 5 or No. 6?
Both. The leaflet is one pattern — one set of instructions and charts — for two colour versions of the same sweater, with the colours side by side in the materials list and the same amounts. No. 5 is dark forest green (on the cover, marked 12-05). No. 6 is white with greys (on the back page, marked 12-06). Only the colours differ.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For No. 6, yes: 0051 (M), 0054 (A), 0056 (B) and 0005 (C) are all still made by Ístex — white, ash heather, light gray and black heather in its Lopi 18 leaflets. Careful with the names: our shop calls 0054 light ash heather and 0056 ash heather, so go by the numbers. For No. 5, two of the four: 0051 (B, white) and 0059 (C, black) are still made, but 0484 (M — the body, sleeves and yoke background) and 0014 (A — the rib, the neckband and the grey-green in both charts) are not. The leaflet prints only the numbers; Ístex calls them forest green and forest heather in its Lopi 18 leaflet for nos. 36 and 37. Our navy No. 5 kit uses 0118 navy and 0010 denim heather in their place, with the same white and black — so its sweater is blue, not green. Its own colour list letters them A to D; in the pattern’s letters navy is M, denim heather A, white B and black C (our reading, by the amounts).
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 105, 111, 117 and 123 cm all the way round and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm to the underarm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body is 38 (40, 42, 43, 44) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s 128 to 160 stitches at the pattern’s gauge (our check). Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same amounts for both versions: M 5 (5, 6, 6, 7), A 2 (2, 2, 3, 3), and B and C 1 (1, 1, 2, 2) each — 9 (9, 10, 13, 14) balls. No. 5: M forest green (0484), A forest heather (0014), B white (0051), C black (0059). No. 6: M white (0051), A ash heather (0054), B light gray (0056), C black heather (0005). The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Anything to watch for?
In sizes S and M the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out” on the sleeves: 44 stitches do not divide by the 8-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm (our reading). The yoke chart is printed in three parts with different repeats, and on rounds 15 and 28 it gives only the number of stitches to decrease — “dec 30(28:26:32:30)sts” and “dec 21(24:27:24:27)sts” — without drawing them, so you spread those decreases evenly round yourself (our reading); the stitch counts all check (our calculation). The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 40 to 48 stitches — about 31 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). The chart key prints the codes short: 484, 14, 51 and 59 for No. 5, and 51, 54, 56 and 05 for No. 6. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweaters are, but not every photo is in the pattern’s colours. In the photo of No. 6, the grey collar under his neckband and his jeans are not part of the pattern, and the woman beside him wears Lopi 12 no. 16 (marked 12-16 in the PDF), a different pattern, with a white polo neck, an earring and dark leggings. The blue sweater is No. 5 knitted in navy and a mid blue — the colours of our navy kit, not the pattern’s greens; that photo is not in the PDF, and the long white skirt and the belt with a silver buckle are not part of the pattern. The PDF’s cover shows No. 5 in the original greens, beside a man in Lopi 12 no. 3 (marked 12-03), a different pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of No. 5; a page with a small photo of No. 6, the sizes, the materials for both versions, the tension, all the instructions, the border chart and the key; a page with the yoke chart, printed in three parts; and a back page with a photo of No. 6 and Ístex’s address.
