Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 23 & 24 — your questions, answered

Which is no. 23 and which is no. 24?
They are the same sweater in two colourways. No. 23 is the man’s sweater on the cover, marked 12-23: light beige heather (0086) with acorn heather (0053) for the rib and neckband, and acorn, white (0051), black sheep heather (0052) and oatmeal heather (0085) in the patterns. No. 24 is the woman’s, marked 12-24: light ash heather (0054) with dark grey heather (0058) for the rib and neckband, and white (0051), black heather (0005) and ash heather (0056). The chart key has a column for each number. Our beige kit is no. 23 and our light grey kit is no. 24.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All of them are still made by Ístex: 0086, 0053, 0051, 0052 and 0085 for no. 23; 0054, 0058, 0051, 0005 and 0056 for no. 24; and the hat’s 0056. The leaflet prints only the numbers — the names on this page are our shop’s, so go by the numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — M, L and XL — with a chest of 111, 115 and 120 cm all the way round and a length of 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 43, 45 and 45 cm to the underarm for women and 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body’s 144 to 156 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check). The hat is printed as one size and the mittens come in M and L; the pattern gives no measurements for either.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same amounts for both versions and both sleeve lengths: main colour (M) 5 (6, 6), A 2 (3, 3), B 1 (2, 2), C 1 (2, 2) and D 1 — 10 (14, 14) balls for the sweater. The hat takes 1 ball of 0056. The mittens take 1 ball of the main colour; their list also names A, B, C and D, which chart 3 uses, but gives no amounts for them.
How are the hat and the mittens made?
Both are on page 4, at the sweater’s gauge, knitted in the round. The hat, by Guðrún Jónsdóttir, is one colour, 0056: cast on 63 stitches on 6 mm double-pointed needles and knit 21 cm of plain stocking stitch — there is no rib — then decrease to 42, 21 and 6 stitches and draw the yarn through. Its size line says “One Size”, but the instructions also give a second number in brackets — 66 stitches and 22 cm — without saying what it is for. The mittens, by Kristbjörg Jónsdóttir, in sizes M and L: cast on 24 (28) stitches in A on 4.5 mm, knit 2 rounds of K1, P1 rib in A, then rib in the main colour to 7 cm; on 6 mm increase to 28 (32), knit 12 rounds, knit the thumb stitches over a contrast yarn, work chart 3 and then the main colour to 18 (20) cm above the rib, and decrease the top at both sides to 8 stitches. The thumb is 12 (14) stitches picked up round the opening. The left mitten has its thumb opening on the other side.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The chart key prints the colour numbers short — 86, 53, 51, 52 and 85 for no. 23; 54, 58, 51, 05 and 56 for no. 24. The mittens’ list calls the main colour G, while the instructions call it M. The pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”. The sweater’s list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, though the sleeves change to 6 mm with 42 (48, 48) stitches — see Needles. The contrast yarn and stitch markers for the mittens, and a tapestry needle, are not in the lists.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The two sweaters, the woman’s grey hat and her mittens are. Her black trousers, the gold watch or bracelet on her wrist and his dark trousers are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both sweaters; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials, the tension and all the sweater instructions, with chart 1 and the key; a page with the yoke chart and the mittens’ chart; a page with the hat and the mittens, each with a small photo, its materials and instructions; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
