Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 14 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All three are still made by Ístex: 0005, 0051 and 0056, all Álafosslopi. The leaflet prints only the numbers; our shop calls them black heather, white and ash heather. 0056 is the light grey in the photo, so go by the number.
Is the hat part of the pattern?
Yes — it is on page 3, designed by Guðrún Jónsdóttir: a plain hat in black heather (0005) from 1 ball of Álafosslopi, on 6 mm double-pointed needles at the same gauge. It is cast on with 63 (66) stitches, knitted round in stocking stitch for 21 (22) cm with no rib, and decreased in three steps at the crown. Its size line reads “STÆRÐ S M L” (stærð is Icelandic for size), but the instructions give two sizes and no measurements; by our calculation 63 and 66 stitches come to about 48½ and 51 cm round. In the photo its lower edge is rolled up.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm all the way round — the body’s stitches at the pattern’s gauge, to within 1 cm (our check). The length is 62 to 72 cm to the centre front neck, and the body is knitted 38 to 44 cm from the hem to the underarm. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: black heather (0005) 6 (7, 7, 8, 8), white (0051) 2 and ash heather (0056) 1 in every size — 9 (10, 10, 11, 11) balls. The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths. The hat takes 1 more ball of black heather.
How is the yoke knitted?
In the round from one chart of 43 rounds, drawn in four parts with repeats of 6, 8, 4 and 2 stitches as the yoke is decreased. No round uses more than two colours except rounds 3, 8, 31 and 36, which use all three (our reading of the chart). Sizes XS to L leave out marked rounds — XS rounds 1, 14, 20, 29, 39 and 42; S rounds 1, 20, 29, 39 and 42; M rounds 1, 39 and 42; L rounds 39 and 42; XL knits every round.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. On yoke rounds 16, 21, 30 and 40 the chart gives only the number of stitches to decrease — for example “rnd 16: dec 20(20:20:24:24)sts” — and draws no decreases; spread them evenly round (our reading). The sweater’s needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 (42, 42, 48, 48) stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them; the hat’s list has them. The list leaves out a tapestry needle, and the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”. The stitch counts all add up (our check).
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweater and the hat are. On the cover, the red paisley scarf at her neck and the cream trousers are not, and neither is anything the man wears: his grey sweater is Lopi 12 no. 18, a different pattern, and his lilac collar and dark trousers are not part of either. The two photos on a white background show a sweater knitted from this pattern, without the hat; the black leggings are not part of it.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, materials, gauge, all the sweater instructions, the border chart and the colour key; a page with the yoke chart and the hat — its photo, materials, gauge and instructions; and Ístex’s back cover.
