Blonde woman on a lawn in front of black timber houses and a grassy bank, wearing the Blue version of Land in the pattern’s colours — a long jacket shading in bands from black at the hem through dark and lighter blues to white at the shoulders, with a deep white rib collar folded over and the front closed. Denim and faded denim, two of the blues, are no longer made. The earrings, the dark top and the dark jeans are not part of the pattern

Why you'll love it

  • Colour in bandsTwo strands are knitted together and one is changed at a time, so the jacket shades in bands from the darkest colour at the hem to white at the shoulders — with no stranded colourwork.
  • Wider at the hem8 stitches are decreased four times on the way up, from 112–135 cm round the hem to 89–112 cm round the chest.
  • A deep collarThe white collar is knitted back and forth in rib, increased by 14 stitches after 3 cm, and worked until it measures 20 cm.
  • Folded hemsThe lower edge and the cuffs are 6 rows of stocking stitch, a purl fold line and 6 more rows, folded to the inside and sewn down.

Land — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Brown version: yes — Plötulopi sheep black (1033), dark brown (1032), brown (0009), beige (1030), light beige (0003), ivory beige (1038) and white (0001) are all still made by Ístex. Blue version: denim (1052) and faded denim (1053) are no longer made; our blue kit uses 2022 blues blue and 2023 light blues blue in their place. Black (0059), midnight blue (0709), navy (0118), winter blue (1432) and white (0001) are still made. Our shop calls 1033 black sheep heather, 1032 chocolate heather, 0009 brown heather, 1030 oatmeal heather, 0003 light beige heather and 1432 winter blue heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 89, 95, 100, 107 and 112 cm and a lower edge of 112, 118, 123, 129 and 135 cm, all the way round. By our check both are the stitch counts at the pattern’s gauge, without the two steek stitches and less the 5 stitches by which the fronts overlap, to within 1 cm. It is long: 60 to 68 cm from the purl row of the hem to the underarm, with sleeves of 45 to 49 cm. Compare with a jacket that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Plötulopi in plates of about 100 g, the same for every size and both versions: 2 plates each of A and G and 1 each of B, C, D, E and F — 9 plates in all. Every part is knitted with two strands together, straight from the plates or wound softly together first.
How do the colour changes work?
You always knit with two strands, and you change one of them at a time. Body: A+A for 11 cm from the purl row, then A+B, B+C, C+D and D+E for 10 to 12 cm each (lengths are given for each size), then E+F up to the underarm. Sleeves: A+A for 7 (7, 7, 8, 8) cm, A+B, B+C and C+D for 8 cm each, D+E for 7 (8, 8, 8, 9) cm, then E+F. In the yoke chart, rounds 1–3 are E+F, rounds 4–22 F+G and the rest G+G; the collar is G+G.
How does it close?
With 5 hooks and bars, or clasps, sewn to the front with the fronts overlapping by 5 stitches. The cut edge is covered on the inside by a thin woven ribbon, 2.5 cm wide and 170 (175, 180, 185, 190) cm long. The pattern adds that for a zip or a crocheted button band you take 6 stitches off the body front; it gives no further instructions for that.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The round begins and ends with a purl stitch at the centre front. At the end you weave in the ends but pull the ones next to the purl stitches through to the right side, sew twice by machine with small straight stitches through each column of purl stitches — dark thread for the lower part, lighter thread for the upper part — rinse and dry the jacket, and cut between the sewn rows. The ribbon is then sewn over the machine stitching and folded to the inside.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small things. The zip or crocheted-band option has no instructions beyond taking off 6 stitches, and the list leaves out stitch holders, a tapestry needle and the sewing machine. The stitch counts all add up (our check).
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The jackets are. The earrings, the dark top and the dark jeans with the blue jacket, and the black top and black trousers with the brown one, are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the Blue jacket; a page with a small photo of the Brown jacket, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and the instructions for the body, sleeves and yoke; a page with the collar, the finishing, the yoke chart and its key; and Ístex’s back cover.
