Young woman with long red-blonde hair blowing in the wind, leaning on a rock by the water, wearing the short Keðja in the pattern’s black and white — a black dress with a white yoke of dots, small diamonds, waves and linked loops, and the same white border above the hem and the cuffs. The dark leggings, the wide black cuff bracelet and the leather cuff with silver ornaments are not part of the pattern

Why you'll love it

  • Two lengthsThe short dress is 58–64 cm from the hem to the underarm, with the border chart above the hem; the long dress is 68–74 cm, with a plain hem.
  • Wider at the hemFrom 115–142 cm round at the hem, the body is decreased evenly and at the sides to 82–109 cm round at the chest.
  • One set of charts, two colouringsThe border and yoke charts serve both versions: the key gives each of the eight colours, and white for every one of them in the black and white dress.
  • Small garter edgesThe hem and cuffs begin with 5 rows of garter stitch knitted back and forth; the short opening this leaves is sewn together at the end.

Good to know

Keðja — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Not all of them. The black and white version, yes: Léttlopi black (0059) and white (0051) are still made. Of the eight colours, four are no longer made by Ístex — sun yellow (1411), orange (1410), light red (1408) and lilac (1413); our eight-colour kit uses 1703 mimosa, 1704 apricot, 9434 crimson red and 1705 royal fuchsia in their place. Heaven blue (1402), spring green (1406), pink heather (1412) and glacier blue (1404) are still made. Our shop calls 1402 heaven blue heather and 1406 spring green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size and length should I knit?
Four sizes, S to XL, with a chest of 82, 91, 100 and 109 cm all the way round; it matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge to within half a centimetre (our check). The hem is 115 to 142 cm round. The short dress is 58 to 64 cm from the hem to the underarm, the long one 68 to 74 cm, and the sleeves are 44 to 49 cm. Compare with a dress or long sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Black (A): 9 (10, 10, 11) for the short dress or 10 (11, 11, 12) for the long. For the black and white version, white (B) 2 (2, 3, 3). For the eight-colour version, one ball of each colour, B to I, in every size.
What is the difference between the short and the long dress?
Besides the length: the short dress starts with the border chart above the hem; the long dress is knitted plain in black for 12 cm instead, so its hem has no border — our reading of the text, and the photo of the long dress shows a plain hem. The side decreases come every 12th round on the short dress and every 13th (13th, 14th, 14th) round on the long one. Both have the border above the cuffs.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Only small things. The long dress’s decrease line has a stray Icelandic word in it (“every í 13th”), and the materials list leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle. The stitch counts all add up (our check).
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The dresses are. In the black and white photo, the dark leggings and the two bracelets — a wide black cuff and a leather cuff with silver ornaments — are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the short black and white dress; a page with a small photo of the long eight-colour dress, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes and all the instructions; a page with the two charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
