Why you'll love it

  • Soft bands of colourOne Einband colour runs through the whole cardigan while the Plötulopi changes every few garter ridges, so the colours blend in gentle stripes.
  • All garter stitchBody, sleeves, yoke, collar and button bands are knitted back and forth in garter stitch, from written colour orders — there is no chart.
  • Wider at the hemThe body loses 8 stitches four times on the way up — 32 stitches, about 21 cm, narrower at the underarm than at the hem (our calculation).
  • A collar and seven buttonsThe last 12 cm, on 4 mm needles, make the collar, and the button bands run from the hem to the top of the collar, with the top button about 2 cm below its edge.

Good to know

Katla — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
All but one. Hyacinth (1429), in the colourful version, is no longer made by Ístex; our colourful kit uses 2026 amethyst in its place. The other thirteen are still made. Colourful: Einband black sheep (0852) with Plötulopi golden yellow (1424), dark amber (1426), jasper red (1427), plum (1428) and marsh (1420). Greytone: Einband black heather (0151) with Plötulopi white (0001), ash heather (1026), light ash (1027), grey heather (9102), dark grey (9103) and black heather (0005). Watch the greys: our shop calls 1026 light ash heather and 1027 ash heather — the other way round — so go by the colour numbers.
How are the two yarns used?
One strand of Einband and one of Plötulopi are always knitted together as one yarn. The Einband (A) stays the same from the hem to the collar; only the Plötulopi changes. At each change the new Plötulopi is twisted together with the old one, and the changes are always made on the wrong side.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 85, 88, 95, 100 and 105 cm. The body’s stitches at the underarm come to within 1.5 cm of that at the pattern’s gauge, before the button bands are added (our check). It is long — 47 to 54 cm from the hem to the underarm — and wider at the hem: about 105, 108, 116, 121 and 127 cm across the whole hem, edge to edge (our calculation). The sleeves are 44 to 50 cm. Compare with a cardigan that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
The same for both colourways: Einband in 50 g balls, 4 (5, 5, 5, 5) of A, and Plötulopi in 100 g plates, one each of the six colours B to G in every size.
Can I make it longer?
Yes — the pattern says you may add 1 to 3 garter ridges in the last colour to lengthen the body, and the same for the sleeves, before you go on.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few numbers, by our check. The sleeves are to measure “44 (45, 47, 50) cm” — four numbers for five sizes; the size table gives 44 (45, 47, 49, 50). At the top of each sleeve the pattern puts the last 4 (4, 4, 5, 5) stitches on a holder, but the count that follows needs that many taken off at each end — 8 (8, 8, 10, 10) in all. At the yoke join, the second underarm group for size M is printed 10 where 8 makes the count add up. And in size M the first yoke decrease row takes off 26 stitches, which gives 196, though the pattern prints 192 and counts on from there. The materials list leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigans are. In the greytone photo the black polo neck and the black clothes under the cardigan are not; in the colourful photo the dark top and the blue jeans are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo of the greytone cardigan; a page with a photo of each colourway, the sizes, the materials for both, gauge, notes, the body, the sleeves and the start of the yoke; a page with the rest of the yoke, the button bands and the finishing; and Ístex’s back cover.
