Good to know

Júní — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
White Álafosslopi (0051), white Plötulopi (0001) and winter blue Plötulopi (1432) are still made by Ístex. The navy is printed as Álafosslopi 1026, but Ístex’s Álafosslopi range has no colour 1026 — that number is light ash in Plötulopi and Einband. Ístex’s Álafosslopi navy is 0118, and that is what our June kit uses. Our shop calls 1432 winter blue heather.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — S, M and L. The size table prints a chest of 57, 59 and 61 cm, far less than the cardigan measures all the way round: the back alone is 54 (60, 64) stitches — 54 (60, 64) cm at the pattern’s 10 stitches to 10 cm — and each front is 23 (25, 27) stitches plus an 8-stitch band. So the printed figure looks like the width across, laid flat (our reading). By our calculation the cardigan is about 108 (118, 126) cm all the way round when buttoned. It is 54, 56 and 59 cm from the hem to the underarm, about 77 (79, 82) cm to the shoulder (our calculation), and the sleeves are 47, 48 and 49 cm. Compare with a cardigan or coat that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: white (A) 6 (7, 7) and navy (B) 2. Plötulopi in 100 g plates: white (C) 3 (3, 4) and winter blue (D) 1.
How is the back pattern knitted?
The diamond chart sits on the middle stitch of the back and is repeated up to the neckline. Every chart square is knitted on both the right side and the wrong side — garter stitch — in alternating stitches of white (A and C together) and navy (B and D together), so the diamonds have a ridged, two-colour texture; the rest of the back is white stocking stitch. The pattern says to work it with the intarsia technique, where each colour area has its own length of yarn. One line says “col B+C” for the chart, but the key says B+D — follow the key (our reading).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. At the back neck the text binds off 7 stitches in the middle in every size, but then the second shoulder cannot mirror the first; by our count 4 (8, 10) stitches leave both shoulders equal. The sleeves are increased from 33 to 47 stitches “in every 6th row and then in every 8th row” without saying how many of each. Both band instructions say “right front”: the button band goes on the left front and the buttonhole band on the right (our reading). The part called “Pocket lining” is the ribbed edge of the pocket opening; the linings are the small pieces knitted first. The list leaves out scrap yarn, markers and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cardigan is, with its buttons (not included). The blue jeans and the earrings are not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, gauge, notes, the back and the start of the fronts, and the back chart with its key; a page with the rest of the fronts, the sleeves, the finishing and a photo of the back; and Ístex’s back cover with a larger photo of the back.
