Woman among Icelandic sheep, holding a horned sheep by its horns, in the Icelandic Zip Cardigan zipped up — the pattern’s black version, a short black heather cardigan with a folded rib collar and a round yoke patterned in oatmeal and white; the warm light makes it look browner than it is. Her mittens, dark trousers and the dark top showing at her neck are not part of the pattern, nor are the clothes of the people behind her

Good to know

Icelandic Zip Cardigan — your questions, answered

Which version is in the photo, and can I still buy the colours?
The photo is the black version; the warm light makes it look browner than it is. We have no photo of the ecru version, and the PDF itself has no photos. All six colours are still made by Ístex: black heather (0005), oatmeal heather (0085) and white (0051) for the black cardigan, and ecru heather (9972), black sheep heather (0052) and acorn heather (0053) for the ecru one.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — 34, 36, 38, 40 and 42 — with a chest of 84, 89, 94, 98 and 103 cm and 30 to 36 cm from the hem to the underarm. It is a short cardigan; the pattern gives no total length. The pattern does not say what the size numbers stand for, so go by the chest measurement. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check).
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same for both versions: A 5 (5, 6, 6, 6), B 1 and C 1 in every size — 7 balls in sizes 34 and 36, 8 in 38, 40 and 42.
How do I knit the ecru version from the chart?
The chart is printed in the black version’s shades, and the key gives both codes for each square: dark = A, 0005 or 9972; beige = B, 0085 or 0052; white = C, 0051 or 0053. So for ecru, knit the dark squares in ecru heather (9972), the beige squares in black sheep heather (0052) and the white squares in acorn heather (0053). The light grey squares are not in the key; by our reading they are stitches already decreased away, so skip them.
Is the front cut open?
Yes. A purl stitch runs up each side of the centre front. You sew two rows of small straight stitches into each one by machine, rinse and dry the cardigan, then cut between them — you need a sewing machine. The zip is sewn in by hand under the front edges with matching thread, first from the right side where the edge folds, then the edge of the zip tape is slip-stitched from the wrong side. The folded collar hides the top of the zip.
Which zip do I need?
An open-ended (separating) zip. The pattern gives 50–55 cm and says to measure when the cardigan is finished, so measure the front opening before you buy it.
Are there misprints?
Three worth knowing. The sleeve length is 45 (47) 49 (51) 53 cm in the size table but 45 (47) 49 (50) 51 cm in the sleeve instructions — measure against your own arm. The yoke total is printed “159 165 (171) 177 (183)”; it should read 159 (165) 171 (177) 183, as the chart shows. And the second row of the moss-stitch hem is printed “*P1, K1, P1*”; work all four hem rows like the first, *K1, P1*, K1, so the hem comes out in moss stitch.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 3 pages: the sizes, materials, body and sleeves; the yoke, collar and finishing; and the yoke chart with the colour key. It has no photos.
