Smiling young man with fair hair in front of shrubs and tall flowering plants in autumn colours, wearing Hringur in the pattern’s own colours — a light ash heather pullover with a round yoke of black heather and chocolate: a band of large zigzags, a row of small dark rings with a light wooden button in every other one, a band of dark points and a dark band near the neck, a folded-down collar, and dark speckled edges at the hem and cuffs. The blue jeans are not part of the pattern

Good to know

Hringur — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Yes. All three are still made by Ístex: Léttlopi ash heather (0054), black heather (0005) and chocolate heather (0867). Our shop calls 0054 light ash heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 98, 102, 107, 111 and 116 cm all the way round — by our check the body’s cast-on stitches at the pattern’s gauge, to within half a centimetre. The length to the centre front of the neck is 56 to 64 cm, and the sleeves are 42 to 46 cm to the underarm for women or 45 to 49 cm for men. Compare with a sweater that fits well before you choose.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls: ash heather (A) 9 (9, 10, 10, 11), black heather (B) 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) and chocolate heather (C) 2 (2, 2, 2, 3) — 13 (13, 14, 14, 17) balls in all. You also need 17 (17, 18, 18, 20) small wooden buttons.
Where do the buttons go?
Into every other ring of the yoke. By our count there is one ring for each 8-stitch repeat of the chart — 34 (35, 36, 37, 38) rings — so sizes S and L have an odd number, and the pattern says to leave two rings in the middle of the back empty. The list gives 17 (17, 18, 18, 20) buttons; by our count XL uses 19 of its 20.
How is the collar made?
On the 3½ mm circular: 9 rounds of knit 1, purl 1 rib and 1 round of stocking stitch. Then you turn the work so the reverse of the neckband faces you — the pattern shows how to take the yarn round one stitch so no hole forms — and knit 9 more rounds of rib, 3 rounds with black heather on the knit stitches and ash on the purl stitches, and 1 round of black heather, then cast off loosely. In the photo the collar is folded down.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things, by our count. Size L’s sleeve: 44 stitches with 16 increases at each end come to 76, where the pattern prints 78 (and the yoke goes on from 78). Size XL’s yoke: the printed sleeve and body figures, 68 and 92, add up to 320, not the printed 304; by our count the XL sleeve has 64 stitches after the underarm and the front and back 88 each, which do add up to 304. The text says the chart is 45 (47, 49, 51, 53) rounds; the chart’s own “skip this rnd” labels leave 48 rounds for S and 50 for M. The colour of the first neckband rounds is not named — by our reading A, which goes on from the yoke. The list names 3½ mm double-pointed needles that the instructions do not use, and leaves out stitch holders and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater is. The blue jeans are not. The buttons are not included.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small copy of it, the sizes, materials, gauge, notes, the body and sleeve instructions, the yoke chart and its key; a page with the rest of the sleeve, yoke, neckband and finishing instructions; and Ístex’s back cover.
